India Wins Another Huge Chase Against Australia

The sixth match of the current 2013 bilateral ODI series between India and Australia has proved to be the photo copy of the match played in Jaipur. India once again overcame a steep target set by Australia. Once again it was Australia’s turn to be on the losing side even after scoring a mountain of runs.

And rightly pointed out by Team India captain M S Dhoni, it is certainly not good for the game. On both occasions India won the matches convincingly. This either shows the strength of the Indian batsmen or the weakness of the bowlers. And only if the bowling is taken into account, then one must tag the Aussie bowling weaker as they have conceded more runs in lesser overs than Indian bowlers in this particular match.

And what’s more, it is Australia who have the worst record of conceding defeats in the best run chases in the history of one day cricket. The top five successful run chases have come against Australia with South Africa being at the top of the table. However, it is the Indian site that holds the record for chasing 350+ targets on two occasions.

On both these occasions, three players have dominated all through- Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Of their six combined innings, they have four centuries to their credit. Kohli has scored hundreds on both occasions and also remained not out. Sharma had a career best innings of 141 unbeaten runs.

The way Indian batting is performing these days, one can hardly believe that all this is getting possible without the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. Even Yuvraj Singh hasn’t fired to the best of his ability or else the picture would have been a bit more different.

The future of Indian batting certainly lies in safer hands with the Sharmas, Dhawans and Kohlis taking the responsibility and showing maturity beyond their age in toughest international conditions even if they were playing in their home country.

With Indian batting in such ominous form, it will not be out of proportion to expect India to defend the 2015 World Cup if they are able to chase down any huge score.
