India Wins A Record Run Chase Against Australia

The successful run chase by India against Australia at Jaipur has gone in the record books as the second highest run chase in the history of one day cricket. India was set a steep target of 360 runs – the same as the one that India were chasing in the finals of the 2003 World Cup finals 10 years ago against the same opposition.

However, India were successful, far too successful this time around. India scored the required runs in just 43.3 overs with as many as 39 balls to spare and nine wickets in hand. This means, in the process India lost just one wicket, which was that of Shikhar Dhawan. He was a tad unlucky to have missed out on a well deserved century, after scoring 95 runs in just 86 balls with 14 fours.

The architects of Indian victory were the centurions Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit Sharma scored 141 and remained not out with Virat Kohli, who scored exactly 100 runs. Rohit’s century came in 102 balls. In his innings, he hit 17 fours and 4 sixes. Kohli, who was always the more aggressive of the two, needed only 52 to reach the three figure mark. He stroked eight fours and seven huge sixes.

At no time did Australia trouble India and never did the Indian batsmen seem to be under pressure. The runs were coming all too easy for India as they kept reaching various thresholds in no time. It took India 8.2 overs to score the first 50 runs of the innings.

In another exactly eight overs, India reached 100 runs. However, it took only 13.3 overs to reach to 200 runs. But as Virat Kohli stepped up the scoring rate, there was no looking back. India needed only 55 balls to cruise from 200 to 300 runs.

With this win, India has recorded the most successful run chase in the history of One Day Internationals (ODIs). The record is held by South Africa where more than 870 runs were scored in almost 100 overs. The Proteas had successfully chased down a target of more than 435 runs.

It looks like Australia may well defend a 200+ score in a 50 over game, but they cannot certainly defend scores in excess of 350 or 400 runs.
