Human Rights Violation In India

Human rights are the inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because he or she is a human being. Human rights are thus conceived as universal and egalitarian. Today we see many instances where our fellow human beings are deprived of their most basic rights.

There are so many human rights issues in India. Custody deaths, torture in custody and custodial rape have been subjects of much concern. This undeniably demonstrates the brutalism of the processes of law enforcement practiced by the police and the armed forces. Many youngsters these days are becoming victims of honor killings by their own family members. But the most intriguing question is how killing can even be considered honorable. Displacement of tribes for developmental projects is very common. Human rights issues that arise include the poverty of rehabilitation and what is considered as development comes under sever scrutiny.

In India many young, fragile girls are forced into child marriages and see their responsibilities crush their childhood. The shameful thing is that society is doing nothing to stop this from happening. Dalits or the people who are often derogatively called the ‘untouchables’ are still viewed with scorn and forced to do menial work. Child labor, though banned is still prevalent. Tender hands which should be writing poetry and solving math problems are forced to work in hazardous industries like fireworks, carpets, etc. the UN estimates that more than 2.4 million people are currently victims of violence after being trafficked. Trafficking of women and children from underdeveloped countries to the developed countries shamelessly continues.

And yet, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many untold stories. Crimes against women and children are as common as they are horrific. There are war crimes and crimes in the name of religion. We have all heard of racism, caste-ism, anti-Semitism. But the only attitude we have shown is escape-ism. It is the escape-ism from the harsh realities of what happens right on our doorstep. It is high time we remove our self- made blindfolds and dig deeper into the problems caused by the violation of Human Rights in India.
