Human Resources Are Increasing, But Natural Resources Depreciating!

In the past 100 years or so, earth has witnessed advanced technology as well as drastic increase in population. Through advanced technology it’s possible to develop agricultural products of high quantity as well as quality, though artificial fertilizers and harmful pesticides are used. Yet we can’t deny the fact that natural resources including agricultural land, fresh air and drinking water have reduced considerably. If things go like this, it won’t be an easy task to feed the exploding new generations with the scarce natural resources available now. When natural land are converted to concrete buildings and trees are cut for transport ways, many natural hazards like global warming are killing we people, day by day.

If famine affects we people, it is the poor under developed nations that are going to suffer most. Natural calamities like tsunamis and earth quakes can also make high impact on living society and people. Now I remember the photograph taken by Kevin Carton in the northern provinces of Sudan. The sketch of a poor kid crawling to reach the food kept at a little distance and a vulture in the background screen has brought tears to my eyes many times. It was a live representation of poor countries including Somalia melting everyone’s heart. If things go like this, we may witness such situations else where too! How long will our natural resources exist this way? Will we get fresh air to breathe after a decade or two? Can we live without air conditioners after a couple of years?

Now women and children of underdeveloped countries suffer a lot from health related problems due to malnutrition and poverty. Increasing food prizes and recession have given new reasons to give more worries to such underdeveloped and developing nations. Perhaps it may affect crores of people all around the world in the distant future. According to World Hunger Reports, 1/7th of world population are under the dark shadows of hunger and poverty. When it reaches 2050, earth needs to supply food for 900 crore people all over the world. A shocking report!

Due to population growth, world needs to find food for 8 crore people extra every year. 35% of Indian population is under poverty line. According to reports, 1/5th of low weight children under 5 years old, belong to India. Malnutrition of pregnant ladies is another problem, yet to resolve. Though many plans have started to erase poverty forever, only a few have become successful. So, Government now thinks of implementing laws for ‘food conservation’.
