How Karkidakom Is Related To Malayalam Culture

‘Ayurvedic treatments like Uzhichil, Pizhichil, Kizhi etc are best when it’s done in Karkidakom month. Our body quickly responds to such treatments when it’s conducted in the month of monsoon’ – Old people say. That’s true indeed. When treatments are done in the last month of the year, we can welcome Chingam and Onam with much enthusiasm and our health and energy stay for one long year. Yes Karkidakom, the last month of Malayalam calendar which falls between July 16th and August 17th is related with Malayalis for many reasons. It’s regarded as the dark month of the year, which is not used for any starting any new firms, to conduct marriages or buy anything new as well. Dasapushpangal and a few rituals are also associated with this month. People also perform annual cleaning of their homes to welcome the New year.  

 

Ramayana month for all Hindus:

As it’s believed to be the bad month of the year, people read Ramayana at home to eradicate the negative power and energy. Ezhuthachan’s Ramayana is recited at homes and all temples of Kerala during this month. Nalambalam visit – visit to four temples of Rama and his brothers during the month of Karkidakom is regarded as auspicious.

 

Best Month For All Treatments:

Karkidakom is the month of diseases like cold, fever, and joint pain due to cold seasons. So, old people suggest full rest for the month of karkidakom. That’s why traditional treatments are normally conducted during this period and body needs rest after treatment as well. Also hot oil applied on body while massaging is fully absorbed by the body during monsoon making the Panchakarma treatment effective than any other season.  Karkidaka Kanji, made of medicinal herbs is included by many people in their diet during this month. ‘Sukhachikilsa’ is given to Kerala elephants this month.

 

Paying homage to ancestors on Karkidakavavu

As per Hindu beliefs, amavasi day of Karkidakom is the most powerful day of evils as well as holy spirits. So Hindus offer Karkidaka Bali to their ancestors on this day and special meals are prepared on this day as well.   

 

Illamnira conducted at temples

Kerala tradition is associated with harvest and rice cultivation and since old days, people reap paddy before the month of Chingam to offer it at temples. Kerala temples celebrate illamnira and puthiri in a grand fashion. Karkidakom is regarded as a holy month as well.
