Introduction:

We all live in a home. It gives us shelter and safety. Some people live in villages and some in town. It may be a hut or a bungalow or flat but it needs some safety. Safety should be given first priority at home but many times we neglect it. As a result many incidents happened. We live with some other family members, out of them some may be kids or old aged persons, but some general safety points should be kept in mind always. We see that many people are seriously injured or even died in accidents which happen at home. Most of this accidents can be prevented if we become some careful and take few common precautions. So safety begins at home.

Here are some discussions about home safety:

• If you are going to build a new home:

If you are making a new home, some points regarding foundation, structure, wall, power and energy and sanitary system should be kept in mind. There should be no compromise in it. Total load depends on structure and foundation. Better to take some advice from an engineer or designer. Give him details about your planning and he will help you with some safety points. If you are purchasing any ready made house or flat, be well informed about load and safety. Check all the points and parameter before entering there. So safety should be given first priority always.

• Electrical safety:

It is an important matter in home safety. Many accidents may happen due to electricity problems. Here are some points.
Use genuine and appropriate parts and appliances in electrical system.
Don’t take any risk by running a heavy appliance in low ampere socket.
Keep switch off when all electrical appliance when these are not in use.
Before exit from house, power off all appliances and if possible switch off the main switch. Then if we forget any individual switch to put off, there will be no risk.
Don’t touch any electrical appliances with wet clothes and hands.
Some time we use immersion heater or any other heater, don’t forget to plug out after use.
Use circuit breaker switch in all lines as if any unavoidable circumstances come, it will automatically put off the whole line.
Keep away all electrical appliances from small children.

• Floor safety:

We must be careful about floor of the house. Some times we wash the floor with water, but it should be left some time to dry. This is to prevent ourselves from falling and hurting. Many times old people are affected due to wet floor. Children and we, the young also may fall.

• Kitchen safety:

We should not allow our children to play in the kitchen as there may be many sharpen things like knives in the kitchen. Now mostly we use gas and stove in the kitchen. We should switch off the switch of gas cylinder when it is not use. Be careful about induction cooker and about micro oven also. Here mother should also be careful to make sure those hot pots or pans are kept safely out of the reach of children. Many accidents may happen due to this reason.

• Bathroom safety;

If any member has any physical weakness or limitations then he/she should use any grab bars. Accompany the small kids when they will use bathroom. Shampoo and perfume, razor blade etc should be kept out of the reach of small kids. Some people use many electrical appliances in bathroom like hair drier, carling iron etc. These also should be kept in safe position. Bathroom floor should be kept clean and dry also. Aged people may fall by slipping and accidents may happen.

• Medicine safety:

Sometime we keep some regular medicines at home. It should be kept in a well tighten container and the container should be kept in upper rack with proper leveling. If possible keep all medicines in a well locked box. After that children should be informed that the medicine should only be handled by adults.

• Doors and windows safety:

It saves us from robbers first. Then from the hot and cold of different weathers. So doors and windows should be hardy and well locked. In multistoried building windows should be closed or ensure so that children can not reach there. Also children should be protected as they can use it as climbing aid. Some times we use glass materials in window. The glasses also should be well fitted as some time the windows may struck repeatedly due to forceful blows.
Now multi point locking system is also available in the market. So a number of safety and security issues are needed regarding doors and windows.

• First Aid Box:

All members of a family must be aware of the necessities of first aid box. It helps to give a quick treatment when any one gets injured, and after first aid, he/ she should be transferred to any hospital. So in emergency situation it helps very much like to stop continuous bleeding or to get relief from any sudden pain. To keep first aid box does not mean that we are waiting for any accidents, but accidents happen accidentally. And so it is always best to be ready.
It also helps in some other emergency situation like heart attack, choking, poisoning or spinal injuries, eye injuries and burn. Only everybody should have some basic knowledge about the use of first aid box.
Some important contents of first aid box:
First aid box with materials can be brought readymade from markets or any one can make up their own with some following medicinal kits.
Bandage and blunt ended scissors to cut bandage.
Antiseptic lotion which may be used with cotton bandage.
Cotton for cleaning cuts.
Aspirin or paracetamol typed tablets.
Some crape bandage.
Some pain relief bum.
Band-aid.
*All should be used before expiry date and as per physician’s advice.
 

Conclusion: We should be alert all times in anywhere. Accidents may happen accidentally, but we should take some precautions at home. We must keep some points in our mind to prevent this. We can make a safety chart also at home. 
Above these all we should keep some extra matters in our minds which are also necessary to live safely.

• We should lock the doors and windows properly when we go out of the house.
• We should not use any plastic materials with immersion heater.
• Many times we lit diya and candle stick in front of God. We should be careful regarding this matter and keep watch on these.
• Women should not wear silky dresses while cooking and also they should not wear too many loose dresses.
• Children should not be allowed to play with any flammable products.
• Electrical plug points should not be kept open also.
