History Of Thiruvananthapuram

The history of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the Indian state of Kerala starts from 1000 B.C. Since that time, it saw huge developments in various aspects becoming one of the important commercial hubs of India. It was formerly called Trivandrum and the name was changed to Thiruvananthapuram in 1991. The name Thiruvananthapuram originated from the word Thiru Anantha Puram which means the City of Lord Ananta. Ananta refers to the serpent Shesha of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple on which Lord Vishnu reclines.

Kerala is vast in its natural treasures and the trading of ivory, spices and sandalwood was carried on since pre-historic era. Ays rulers dominated this place until the beginning of 10th century A.D. and this was followed by the rule of Venad Kings. Also the place had to face the attack of the Chola empire in 11th and 12th century A.D. during the reign of Cheras.

The frequent troubles between the rulers and the trustees of the temple became a common scene for 12th century to 16th century. The temple trustees had good influence among people and they tried to assert their supremacy over the rulers and this resulted in frequent conflicts. The King Raja Aditya Varma ruled the state of Travancore that included Thiruvananthapuram in 17th century. The temple trustees wanted to get rid of him and so poisoned him to death. Rani Umayamma had six children and among them five were killed by the same trustees. So Umayamma Rani came to power.

It was during the regime of Umayamma Rani in 1684 that the English East India Company approached her and obtained a piece of land to establish their factory and trade center. The place was called Anchuthengu anglicized as Anjengo located few kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram. With Anjengo as their base city, British were able to expand their domain to Thiruvithamcore also called Travancore. Umayamma Rani fled to Nedumangad when the place was attacked by Mughal Sirdar. However with the help of one of the members of the royal family of Kottayam named Kerala Varma, she was able to win back her power. But Kerala Varma was also killed in 1696.

In 1729, Marthanda Varma established the state of Travancore with Padmanabhapuram as its capital. Later the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram in 1745. He ruled the place for three decades starting from 1729 to 1758. He ordered for the renovation of the Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

English East India Company established their residence in Thiruvananthapuram according to the treaty of 1791. As the city was facing threats from Mysore, they also brought their troops to protect the place. The tenure of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal from 1829 to 1847 and Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal from 1860 to 1880 could be said as the golden period in history of the state because many developmental programs were launched that helped for the all round development of the city. The colleges and schools were started including the Sanskrit College, Women’s College, Law College and Ayurvedic Collge.

After India got its independence, Thiruvananthapuram was made as the capital of the Thiru-Kochi state in 1949. When the state of Kerala was formed on linguistic lines on 1st November 1956, Thiruvananthapuram became its capital city. Thiruvananthapuram photos and Thiruvananthapuram videos became very famous after the discovery of the vast treasures of Padmanabha Swamy temple.
