History Of Pune

The history of Pune, one of the largest cities of the Indian state of Maharashtra dates back to the 5th century A.D. It was in 5th century that Kasba Peth was constructed. There was a settlement called Punnaka in 8th century and the city would have got its name from that. According to the Puna Gazetteer, Punya means holiness or goodness. In Hindu tradition, the confluence of two rivers is considered Sacred and in Pune there is such a confluence called Punyanagari. Thus it got its name. It is also called Poona.

Yadava Empire dominated over this place until the 17th century when it was annexed by Mughal Empire. Maloji Bhosale became the Jagirdar of Pune in 1595. Shahaji Bhonsle was made as the governor of Pune in 1625. During his time, the town saw many constructions and developments. Chapttrapati Shivaji was the son of Shahaji and he became the king in 1647. For a short period of time after the reign of Shivaji, the region went into the hands of the Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb. Aurangazeb constructed Budhwar Peth in 1703. He renamed it Muhiyabad. His rule lasted only for few years and again, Baji Rao I became the Peshwa of Maratha Empire.

The Peshwa rule ended with the Third Battle of Panipat. In 1817, after the defeat of the Peshwas in the Third Anglo Maratha War between British and Marathas at the Battle of Khadki, British became the supreme power in this region. In 1858, the municipality of Pune was established and since that time, it became the monsoon capital of the Bombay Presidency. With the help of Rani Lakshmi Bai and Tatya Tope, the adopted son of Baji Rao II, Nanasaheb Peshwa revolted against the East India Company in 1856 but his mutiny failed.

Pune saw huge developments in educational sector during the British rule. Many schools and colleges were started. It also served as a center for the social reforms. Many great reformists like Mahadev Govind Ranade, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde, Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar and Jyotirao Phule lived in this place in a time period of 1858 to 1947.
