History Of Allahabad

 

Allahabad is one of the fastest growing cities of India and is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh. River Ganges and River Yamuna that flows on three sides of the city joins here. Together with these two rivers, it is belived that the invisible Saraswati River also joins them and so this place is called as Sangam. Sangam is one of the holy places of Hindus where Kumbh Mela is performed. The Allahabad photos and Allahabad videos of the Kumbh Mela is famous among people. Hindus believe that taking bath in Sangam will wash away all their sins and Huen Tsang the Chinese traveler who visited this place in 643 A.D. had written in his documents that the people laid their lives here as it was believed that anyone died here would attain Mukthi.

 

In ancient India, Allahabad was also called Prayag or Prayagraj. Located near this was Kaushambi, the capital of the Vatsa Kingdom. Jhunsi lies to the east of the city which was once known as Pratisthanpur and served as the capital of the Chandrawanshi dynasty. It is believed that Brahma attended a ritual of sacrifice here after creating this universe. The excavations in this site had proved the human existence in the place in 600 B.C. The common belief is that the city existed during the time of Ramayana and the Lord Rama spent his time in the Ashram of Sage Bharadwaj located here at that time.

 

Various dynasties including Maruyan dynasty, Gupta dynasty, Kushan dynasty, Kannauj dynasty and Mughal dynasty ruled this place one after the other. Mohamed Ghori invaded and took over the place in 1193 A.D. The Mughal Emperor Akbar named it Illahabad in 1575 and it later changed into Allahabad. He built a fort here with an Ashokan pillar. The Prince Salim who became the Mughal Emperor Jahangir revolted against his father Akbar from Allahabad Fort and after the death of Akbar in 1605, he became the king.

 

After the Battle of Buxar in 1765, the control of Allahabad was taken from Mughals and given to the Nawab of Awadh by the British forces. However in 1801, it came under the direct control of the British and it was made as the capital of the North Western Provinces of Agra. When United Provinces of Agra and Oudh was formed in 1877, Allahabad became its capital and it lasted as the capital city until 1920.

 

The fourth oldest university of India, Allahabad University was established on 23rd September 1887. The Allahabad high court was established in 1834. The rebels brought the city under their control during the Great Revolt of 1857. The fourth session of the Indian National Congress was held in 1888. The revolutionary leader Chandrasekhar Azad killed himself at the Alfred Park in Allahabad. Anand Bhavan and Swaraj Bhavan the home of Nehru family are located here. The seeds of the separate state of Pakistan were sowed through the presidential address of Allama Muhammad Iqbal on 29th December 1930.

Singh, Madan Mohan Malavya, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Dhyan Chand, Zameer Hassan Kazmi, Harish Chandra, Hakim Hammad Usmani, Nargis, Amitabh Bachchan, Mohammed Kaif, Madan Lal Kurana, Purushottam Das Tandon, Murli Manohar Joshi, Hemawati Nandan Bahuguna, etc.
