Hindi Remakes Of Old Classics

Sonam Kapoor's Khubsurat is to set theatres this month. Khubsurat is a classic Bollywood movie of early 1980s best known for the lively performance of Bollywood Diva – Rekha. Can the new version replicate the success of original? We have to wait a few more days to get answer to this question. Why remakes are made? Is it because Bollywood is now scarce of good scripts and ideas? Through this article let me list a few more movies that have been remade on Bollywood silver screen in the recent times.

Let me start with ‘Mother India’. Can anyone deny the fact that Mother India is the best remake ever made on Bollywood? One of the legendary films of Indian cinema, the first Indian movie to get nominated for Academy awards, Mother India also shares a few more interesting facts. It’s a remake of same director Mehboob Khan’s earlier film Aurat (1940)!!! Khan was not satisfied with the original and wanted to give a new touch to the same script – Rest is history! Most of Rajshree productions’ movies are new versions of their old hits. Hum aapke hain kaun from Nadiya ke paar is the best instance. Ek Vivaah... Aisa Bhi from their hit movie Tapasya and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon from Chitchor are other instances.

Like remakes from south Indian and Hollywood movies, remake of old hits and classic movies is also a new trend in Bollywood. Though film critics and film lovers love to see the movie in original version, a few of such remakes have clicked at box office as well. The most recent release is ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ – a modified version of DDLJ. The fresh look of the movie was appreciated as well. Another take was Dev D – Modern Devdas which received critics’ appreciation apart from Bollywood success. Yet in most cases, they have failed to replicate the success of original if no attempt has made on the presentation of story in a new line. The worst remake ever made may be Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag. The historic movie Sholay can never be made on screen once again, that’s the truth!

Agneepath gave Big B his first National award in 1990. Later the same role was reprised by Hrithik Roshan in 2012. The movie was titled the same. Though the movie received mixed response from critics, it managed to become a box office hit. Sholay and Zanjeer are the blockbuster movies of Amitabh Bachchan whose remakes became disasters at box office. Don starring Shah Rukh khan was a box office hit and its sequel was made.

Devdas is the most popular Indian love story that has been made a movie several times. After the release of silent version in 1927, Devdas has been made 4 times in Bollywood. K.L. Saigal, Dileep Kumar, Shah Rukh khan and Abhay Deol portrayed the role of Devdas. Of these 4 versions, Dileep Kumar’s Devdas directed by Bimal Roy is regarded as classic. Dev D – an experimental film with a new climax also clicked at box office.

Now before I conclude let me mention a few more such Bollywood remakes. Jeena Sirf Mere Liya from "Anmol Ghadi", Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster from Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, Chashme Badoor, Himmatwala, Umrao Jaan, Karz…… List is not complete. Bol Bachchan was inspired from Golmaal and was a box office hit.
