Hindi Hits Of K.J.Yesudas

K.J.Yesudas is the blessed singer of south India who is often called as ‘Gaana Gandharvan’ by his fans. His distinct voice and singing style have conquered millions of music lovers all over the world. Bollywood is also not free of it. Through this column, I would like to mention a few of his best songs of Bollywood.

The first song that comes to my mind is none other than National award winning song of movie ‘Chitchor’ – Gori tere gao bada pyaara. No doubt, music composer Raveendra Jain has given the finest tunes to Yesudas, the second composer is of course Usha Khanna. Chitchor’s songs are one such. All the songs are still considered classic, whether it’s Jab deep chale aana, Aaj se pehle or Tu jo mere sur mein sur milale. The second movie that comes to my mind is ‘Sadma’. The lullaby composed by Illayaraja is still considered one among the most popular songs of Yesudas in Hindi cinema music. Both its Tamil and Hindi versions were sung by him. The song is ‘Surmayee akhiyon mein’. People still remember this movie for this amazing song sung by Yesudas.

Most of the songs sung by him were composed with classical base. Best instances are Kaha se aayi badra of Chasma Baddoor and Kaa karoom sajni aayena baalam of Swami. Dil ke tukde tukde karke of Dada is another memorable song still remembered for its words and the singer. Again, its music is given by Raveendra Jain. It’s also to be noted that he has sung for quite a few numbers for Amol Palekar in movies like Chitchor, Choti si baat, Dada and a few more.

Now let me mention a few more songs in a quick glance. Maana ho tum behat haseen of the movie Toote Khilona, Jaaneman jaaneman tere do nayan ofChoti si baat, Madhuban khushboo detha hai of Saajan bina suhagan, O goriya re of Naina, Title song of Sunaina, Khushiyan hi khushiyan of Dulhan wohi jo piya man bhaaye, Zid na karo of Lahoo ke do rang, Mohabbat badi kaam ki cheez hai of Trishul, Oh bavre of Daud, Dheere dheere Subah hui of Haseeyat, Chand jaise mukhde pe of Sawan ko aane do and Chalo man gaaye of Swami Vivekanantha. It’s true he has sung only a few songs for Bollywood. But I know many North Indian people who love this great singer and his voice for the few songs he has given new birth by his magical voice.
