Harbhajan Singh - The Only Indian Bowler To Take A Test Hat Trick

Harbhajan Singh was born on 3rd July 1980 in Jalandhar, Punjab.  He graduated from Parvati Jain High School.  He played for Punjab in the domestic cricket.  In his family circle, he is known as `Sonu’. In the cricketing world, he is popularly known as `Bhajji’.

Harbhajan Singh is a right hand bat and a right arm off spin bowler. He made his test debut against Australia at Bangalore on 25th March 1998. He made his one day debut against New Zealand at Sharjah on 17th April 1998. He made his T20 international debut against South Africa at Johannesburg on 1st December 2006.

Harbhajan Singh has played so far in 95 tests scoring 2,094 runs with a top score of 115. He has two centuries and nine fifties. He has taken 42 catches and 400 wickets. He has played 229 one day matches scoring 1,190 runs, picking up 69 catches and 259 wickets. He has played 23 T20 internationals, scoring 99 runs and taking 6 catches and 18 wickets. He has played 438 first class matches, scoring 5,034 runs, taking 163 catches and 1,002 wickets.

His temperament has always given him away as he is impulsive and fierce when competing. He crossed the limits many times causing controversies and was reprimanded. Within three years of his debut, he impressed the whole world by picking up thirty two wickets in a three test series against the visiting Australian test team in 2001 under Steve Waugh. In the same series, he became the first Indian to take a test hat trick.

Harbhajan Singh has also played for Lancashire and Surrey teams. He made history recently as the first batsman at No. 8 to score successive centuries in tests during New Zealand’s tour of India in 2010. In one day internationals, he is India’s most successful spinner after Anil Kumble. He is currently the most successful off spinner in tests after the retirement of Muralidharan. He is the third most successful off spinner in tests all time after Muttiah Muralidharan and Lance Gibbs. He may be the most successful off spinner in India but he is definitely not in the class of Errapalli Prasanna in his classical mould even with the `Doosra’ in his armory.

After Anil Kumble’s retirement, Harbhajan Singh is leading the spin attack for India. In the recent past, he has proved himself a capable all rounder by knocking consecutive centuries against New Zealand. He has also played an important role in the T20 World Cup in 2007 when he picked up sixteen wickets out of the twenty two matches. But since then, he has managed only two more wickets in the short version of the game.

Just two days before this post, Harbhajan Singh reached his four hundredth wicket in the West Indies. He has become the third Indian bowler to take four hundred wickets in test matches after Kapil Dev Nikhanj and Anil Kumble.  He has become the tenth player in the history of cricket to take 400 wickets and score a century in tests. On being interviewed after he picked up his four hundredth wicket, Harbhajan Singh mentioned to the reporter that he worked hard and God did the rest for him.
