Happy New Year Vs Sapthamashree Thaskaraha

Sapthamashree Thaskaraha and Happy New Year – two big Indian releases in the second half of 2014 and two are blockbuster hits as well. Sapthamashree Thaskaraha – was the biggest Onam release of Malayalam and Happy New Year – the much anticipated and the biggest Diwali release of Bollywood. Both the movies had a lead actor, apart from a strong supporting cast and both the movies explored the same subject – Through team work, how is it possible to break a safe locker to loot so much of money/diamond and both of them are revenge sagas as well. No doubt, both these releases (released within a short interval of 45 days or so) had some surprising co-incidences though not intentional. It’s foolish to say that Happy New Year is inspired from Sapthamashree Thaskaraha. Yet it’s amazing – both these robbery stories have the same plot!

Sapthamashree Thaskaraha is the story of 7 thieves; some of them are thieves in real life which a few others have joined them to execute a plan. ‘Sapthamashree Thaskaraha’ is a Sanskrit phrase which literally means 7 ‘graceful’ thieves. The team is led by Prithviraj and his 7 associates are Asif Ali, Sudheer Karamana, Nedumudi Venu, Chemban Vinod Jose, Salaam Bhukari and Neeraj Madhav apart from the female member Sanusha who helps them to do the robbery. The team members meet at Viyur prison and despite having different histories, they decide to join hands to take revenge on Pious Mathew, the character portrayed by Joy Mathew. Mathew is responsible for the death of Prithviraj’s wife and senior banker Nedumudi Venu’s downfall in business and the team decides to loot his back money stored in the hospital storage to take revenge. They beautifully execute the plan and is helped by Nedumudi Venu’s daughter, character played by Sanusha. Though all the team members get the dividend of their profits, Prithviraj turns out to be the biggest thief among all. The movie which brought Thrissur accent to Malayalam movies was a roaring success at box office.

Happy New Year too is a revenge saga where Shah Rukh Khan waits for long 8 years to execute a plan to put the antagonist Jackie Shroff behind the bars. Years earlier, Khan’s father portrayed by Anupam Kher was accused of diamond robbery and put to jail, though it was done by Shroff. In this movie too, the team members unite to form a master plan that ruins Jackie Shroff. Shah Rukh Khan’s team members include Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah and they also seek help from ‘Mohini’, a bar dancer – the character portrayed by Deepika Padukone. In the pretend to contest in a world dance competition, they loot the precious diamonds held in a safe locker and the blame falls on Jackie Shroff.

Both the movies experimented with the same plot – loot the antagonist’s treasure to teach him the lesson. Both the heroines have also helped the crew in the plan, though their roles are small, but significant. Yet if I am asked to compare both these movies, in terms of script, comedy and narration, Sapthamashree Thaskaraha is far better than ‘Happy new year’; also in terms of humour and dialogues.  The movie was presented/narrated in such a way, that has never been witnessed on Indian screen before and the supporting cast with a powerful script is the backbone of the movie. It keeps our mind engaged at every point and the plot through which the team loots the money from hospital locker is just amazing.
