Gulzar's Musical Records At Filmfare As Lyricist

Filmfare is the most prestigious awards of Bollywood similar to Oscar awards of Hollywood. Though the winners don’t get any award money similar to state awards or national awards, Bollywood people prefers Filmfare to National awards and is always seen as a credit. Special preference is always given to its musical section. If we take the best lyrics category alone, Anand Bhakshi exceeds all in terms of total nominations. He has been nominated 40 times, though he was able to win only 4 times. More than nominations, number of wins always deserves a special credit. So, wins of Gulzar as a lyricist is always so special. He has been nominated 28 times and has resulted in 11 wins till now, thus making his name at the top list. Gulzar is a versatile person whose films have been nominated frequently in Filmfare, National awards and other awards. It’s not just for lyrics and music, but also for best movie, screen play and direction too. I am excluding all those talks from this article and solely concentrating on his achievements as a lyricist only.

For the first time, he was nominated in Filmfare for best lyricist in the year 1976 for the movie Aandhi. It was his directorial venture too, and had multiple nominations that year. The song was ‘Ter bina zindagi se koi’, but he couldn’t win it. He has been consecutively nominated for the next three years too. The songs are Dil doondta hai of Mausam, Do deewane shahar mein (he won it in 1977), and Naam gum jaayega chehra yeh badal jaayega of Kinara.

Aanewala pal is still among the most memorable songs of Bollywood all time sung by Kishore da for R.D. Burman. This particular song for the movie Golmaal was written by Gulzar and he won a Filmfare award too, for the year 1979. He created magic in the consecutive year winning it again for the song Hazaar Raahen Mud Ke Dekhi of Thodi si bewafai.

Jahaan Pe Savera of Baseera was his nomination for 1982 and he won it next year for the song, Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindagi of Masoom. National award winning song with irregular lyrics, ‘Mera kuch saman’ of Izzazzat won a Filmfare too and it happened in the year 1988. Yaara sili sili of Lekin also made the similar double record, in the year 1991!

Dil hum hum kare of Rudali, Chappa chappa of Machis, E ajnabi of Dil se, Aaja maahiya of Fiza, Chup chupke of Bunti aur babli, Dheere chalna of Paheli, Beedi song of Omkara, Tu Meri Dost Hai of Yuvraj, Dhan Te Nan of Kaminey and Tere bina of Guru are other nominations without win, while Kajra re of Bunti aur babli, Chayya chayya of Dil se, Dil to bacha of Ishquiya, Challa song of Jab tak hai jaan and Saathiya won it for him.
