A man’s best friend, a phrase commonly heard is becoming more prominent here in Manipal. A pet brings in oodles of joy with it apart from all the responsibilities. Coming home to a comrade that can instantly brighten your day just with a wagging tail is an indulgence only a pet owner can experience. Pets are non-judgmental, welcoming, accepting and attentive.

While most students in Manipal are away from family, having a pet as a companion lifts their spirits when they feel homesick. The unconditional love rendered by pets helps feel at home and gives a sense of security. Albeit having a lot of responsibilities staying away from home, most students don’t mind having pets and nurturing them. That pets need constant attention and care, there are students who are willing to invest their time and energy.

Neetu Murali, a student of Manipal Institute of Management shares her space with a Persian cat. She says, “Although I have a busy schedule and ever increasing burden of assignments and projects, I always find time for my pet. The joy it brings in makes everything else seems trivial.”

Students also face monetary issues because they live on a limited allowance and have to plan their expenditure cautiously. Getting permission from the building owners is another uphill task; most students who cannot keep a pet at home take care of strays.

“I love dogs but due to lack of time and space I take care of the stray dogs near my apartment and the gratitude they show is special and unsurpassed”, said Vikram Lakshmipathy, a M.Tech student from MIT.

Given the advantage of the duration of the course from 4-5 years, it is mostly the students of KMC who own pets. The disheartening situation surfaces when some of them have to leave their pets to the streets or give them to an animal shelter after the completion of the course. The ones who can take them back are the elated ones.

The odds are even yet it does not lower the spirits of the students to keep pets and yet maintain budgets to look for someone back at home after a mundane tiring day.
