From Om Shanti Om To Cocktail

An independent woman with her own principles and way of living – That’s what we have noticed in the roles played by Deepika Padukone in the different shades of celluloid. She acted in a music video of Himesh Reshammiya and a Kannada movie before entering Bollywood industry. She was most known as the daughter of former Badminton icon of India – Prakash Padukone only. But through the different roles she portrayed onscreen she created her own finger prints and many have even forgotten that she belongs to the family of this great Badminton player.

Through the debut movie, Om Shanti Om itself, she showed signs of the promising actress of tomorrow. It has happened definitely happened the same way what film critics told predicted about her. From a smiling diva of Om Shanti Om, she moved on with many experimental roles that can be tagged under ‘New generation cinema’ where drinking and casual sex are common. Through the characters she played, she represented the woman of today and how much independent she is. It is well illustrated in the movie ‘Cocktail’ which shows her as an ultra modern girl with traditional Indian values hidden inside the deep corners of her mind. It is somewhat similar to her role in Love aaj kal, paired with Cocktail’s hero – Saif Ali Khan. Now her career has reached at a particular destination with the blockbuster hit of Yeh jawani hai diwani, most recently.

Karthik calling Karthik, Dezi Boys, Cocktail, Race 2, Houseful, Break ke baad and Bachna e haseeno are other movies that showed her as an ultra modern woman. Item numbers of Billu and Dum maro dum extended her role as a glamour girl of B’town. No doubt she has become the representative of new generation woman – independent, financially sound and world filled with fun and entertainment. In the first movie, she presented herself in two distinct roles of extreme poles and proved that she is flexible with the roles given to her. Yet she is most casted as a glamorous actress onscreen that people love to watch on screen repeatedly. A few exceptions include Lafange parinde, Aarakshan and Khelein hum jee aur jaan se.  Through Cocktail, she has proved that she is not only glamorous but has enough potential to lift any character that is given to her. So, like the surprise package of ‘Yeh jawani hai diwani’, let us wait a few more surprises from this Bangalore girl.
