What’s eye-hand co-ordination? Through visuals we are collecting information and our hands react according to it, best example: A cricketer playing cricket or a kid catching ball – it happens only if eye-hand co-ordination is working properly. Have you even noticed if your baby’s hands are reaching with his mind and eyes? It’s to be noticed in the early age itself so that you can improve it, in case it needed so.

There is a phase of growth in eye-hand co-ordination from the age of 2 months to 5 years. Let me explain in brief, a few points to note. A new born infant will always keep his little fingers closed till he is 2 months old. Gradually he begins to use his fingers and take things and respond to his surroundings, as a part of his growing phase. He holds others’ hands when he is three months old when he is three months old and begins to collect things, one month later. At 5 months, he picks up toys and begins to use both hands in the same way. After 6 months, he begins to drop toy in his hand to catch another one, if you lend him one. Seventh month is really dangerous as he puts everything in his mouth, he gets, coins, papers, toys etc. Great attention should be taken this stage.

In the eight month, his mind and brain develops a lot. He becomes more self dependent. Now he can take things by pinching and begins to eat food his own. Slowly he begins to play with two things in his hands, and when he reaches 10 months, he picks up things from ground. He begins to play with balls when he reaches one more month and within one year, he becomes more self-dependent who eats food with spoon. Now he begins to draw pictures and colour them, and within 5 years, he learns well how to draw circles, triangles, rectangles and even men and animals.

We can improve our kid’s eye-hand co-ordination by giving him clay modeling to play. Also ask him to pick bottles or play ball with him. Also, whenever he shows interest in eating something, picking up things, drawing figures or shapes or playing with objects, encourage him. Never compare him with other kids. Also, choose toys that suit his age best.
