Sridevi made a celebrated comeback to silver screen in 2013 after long 15 years with the tri-lingual movie – English Vinglish. The movie was a smash hit at box office. Sridevi disappeared from silver screen in 1998 after her release – Judai aside Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar. Similar to film’s title she gave a break to her screen presence post her marriage with Boney Kapoor. Same is the case of celebrated actress Manju Warrier of Mollywood 1990s. In a short span of only 3 years, she became the number 1 actress and she shocked everyone by marrying her co-actor Dileep in 1999. Similar to Sridevi, this reigning queen too quit silver screen to get settled with her family life.

Similar to Sridevi’s comeback to silver screen, Manju too returned back after long 15 years – quite co-incidence. They returned back to silver screen in the consecutive years – 2013 and 2014 and both the movies were highly appreciated by critics as well as audience. Latest news is that Tamil top actress Jyothika too is planning to make a comeback to silver screen after 7 years with the Tamil remake of How Old are you.

Comeback of the popular actresses Sridevi and Manju Warrier share some unique and striking similarities for many reasons. Both ruled the film scene and were at the top slot, when they said good bye to screen. Both returned back after 15 long years as well. The stories of their comeback movies too share many common instances. In both the movies, heroines play the role of suppressed middle aged housewives who doesn’t get enough attention from their spouses, though they spent their youth and full time for the welfare of the family. Both the ladies are frustrated by the behavior of her family members. One-woman fight of those these ladies in the movies also earns them enough appreciation.

When Shashi Godbole played by Sridevi works hard and learns to speak English to gain more attention and respect from her family members, Nirupama rajiv – the character played by Manju achieves success in life by starting an organic vegetable garden and gains appreciation from everyone, including State agriculture minister and President of India. In both cases, the leading ladies face the mockery over them and show that everything is possible for them. Though the film’s storyline was compared to real life of Manju Warrior, truth is that we can find hundreds of such middle-aged wives in India, who despite having dreams and talents, sacrifice everything for the welfare of their family. In this case, both the movies give good message to the female members of the society to pursue their dreams; age is not a big factor.
