Energy Crisis And Its Solutions

In 1973, when fuel crisis occurred, then arose the need to protect energy for future use. Thus in 1976, Engineer of General Electric Company, Edward Hammer invented CFL. CFL saves a lot of energy and its life span is 10 times more than incandescent lamps. Though bit expensive, in long terms, it is economic. Nowadays LED has conquered the world with its miraculous power to reduce power consumption.

The real meaning of the word ‘Energy’

The idea of energy and power was born from Visviva. In the 17th century, Leibniz found that energy of an object is the product of mass and momentum of that object. In 1807, English scientist Thomas Young used the word first whose literal meaning was energy. Till then, ‘Visviva’ was used to denote the term energy. Later many forms of energy were found and given names too. Thus came into existence electrical energy, electro magnetic energy, sound energy, heat energy, chemical energy, solar energy, light energy etc.

In 2001, a government organization was formed – Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and it works under Power department. Its aim is to conserve energy and use it wisely and effectively. Those ideas were preached through media and mass communication. In India, December 14 is celebrated as National Energy Conservation Day. If we reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, we can increase the economic status of our country. It reduces power consumption and pollution too. As population increases, energy consumption is increasing in geometric progression – a much worrying factor.

Wind and power

From ancient time itself, wind has been used as a source to generate power. It was wisely used for the sail of ships without energy, where ships used to sail according to the direction of wind. It was long before the invention of petroleum products. Turbines that rotate with wind generate power that can be used to grind grains and pump water. It is a renewable source of natural energy and it never gives rise to pollution. If wind turbines are present in large numbers, wind energy can be used to produce electricity. Today 2.5 lakh megawatt electric power is produced from wind energy all over the world.

The biggest source of energy is solar power. The whole solar system exists on the energy released by sun. Every year, earth absorbs 37.5 lakh Extra joule energy from sun. Through photosynthesis, plants store 3000 extra joules. So, the whole energy supplied by petroleum and uranium products is much less than solar energy absorbed by earth a year. A solar power station that produces 354 megawatt electric power is now functioning in California.
