Recently I came across this article on the newspaper about a 23 year old aspiring civil servant who had knocked down a man while on her way to south Mumbai for shopping. The man turned out to be grievously injured in the beginning but was found dead when he was rushed to the hospital. The person who was driving the car was found to be under the influence of alcohol. This is not an isolated case. Almost every year more than 10 million people die as a result of accidents cause by drunk driving. You may have seen or read reports in newspapers about this.
Now this problem is actually not very easily solvable even though it looks like that. Why so many people drive when they are clearly drunk and not in a condition to drive has been a mystery all these years. Alcohol impairs a person’s motor function and that means a dunk person is not in control of the movements of his hands and legs and the last time I checked that was the basic requirement in order to operate any vehicle.
There have been numerous measures taken by the law in order to curb this. These days, traffic policemen assigned to check drunken driving are everywhere but it is still not enough. Even though it is a punishable offence in the eyes of the law and you could be jailed and your license could be snatched away people still continue doing it. And this leads to a lot of innocent people getting killed due to car accidents and road rage.
Every single injury and death caused by drunken driving is preventable. Although the no. of such incidents has reduced in the recent years it is one of the leading causes of death. Almost 40% of the accidents that occur on a daily basis happen due to drivers driving under the influence of alcohol. Just fines and imprisonment will not help. Many people should be made aware of just how much trouble it could cause and how they can easily avoid all the trouble by not getting into a vehicle while they are drunk. It is high time people started taking responsibility for their actions instead of committing random acts of stupidity which would ultimately result in a loss of numerous lives.
