Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam - Missile Man Of India

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam who was the 11th president of India was also known as the president of people. He served for the nation as President from 2002 to 2007. He is also known as the missile man of India due to his work in space rocket and ballistic missile technology development. He played a pivotal role during Pokhran nuclear test in 1998. Before his term as President of India, he served as the aeronautical engineer in Indian Space Research Organisation and Defence Research Development Organisation. Presently he is working with Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology as Chancellor. In addition to this, he is serving as professor in Anna University and visiting professor in IIM Ahmadabad and IIM Indore.

About Education and Early Life 

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu on 15 October 1931. Kalam’s father was boat owner who rented these boats to local fisherman. Dr. Kalam grew up as fond of nature. For continuing his studies, he started his career as vendor of newspaper. He graduated in Physics from St. Jpseph’s College of Tiruchirapalli. Thereafter, he went for the diploma in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT (Madras Institute of Technology).

Career

After graduation, he involved in the development of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle. He played a crucial role in the development of Indian Missile program. From July 1992 to December 1999, he served as the chief scientific advisor of prime minister. Nuclear test at Pokhran conducted in this period.

Books and Movements

Recently, Dr. Kalam started the mission for youth known as what can I give movement. In addition to this, in his book, India 2020, he strongly advocates the plan for the develop India in the developed nation and superpower 'in knowledge' by 2020. In South Korea, there is the demand for the translated version of this book. In addition to this, he actively took part in other development program related to science and technology field. He supports the use of free software on a large scale that will bring the information technology benefits to others.

Honours and Awards

In 1981, he was honoured with Padma Bhushan. Again in 1990 and 1997, he was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna. In 2008, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore honoured him with doctor of engineer. In 2009, California Institute of Technology of USA honoured him with International Von Karman Wings Award and Hoover Medal from ASME Foundation of USA. Anna University of Tamil Nadu awarded him with doctor of science in 2009.

Books Written by Him

Dr. Kalam writes a lot of books that include Wings of fire, an autobiography of him. In addition to this, he writes books on the vision of unleashing power and the new millennium that includes Ignited minds, India 2020, India my dream, and Children ask Kalam etc.

Dr. Abdul Kalam played a significant role in Indian Space science as well as in Indian Politics as President. He is still working for the nation with zeal and enthusiasm.
