DON'T 'R.I.P.' NOW, INDIA!

The Indian Prime Minster, Dr. Manmohan Singh has appealed for calm in the capital Delhi following violent protests over the gang rape of a medical student. He has further stated that his government would make all possible efforts to ensure security and safety to all women. The 23 year old victim and her friend were returning after watching a film when they boarded a bus, where she was raped repeatedly for an hour. Both she and her companion were beaten with iron rods and thrown out of the moving bus into a Delhi street. This gruesome attack that has led to her death after fighting for her life for nearly 2 weeks in a Delhi hospital has become a trigger point for the spontaneous and apolitical protests in different cities of India. Amid the hail of weeklong protests against rape in Delhi, molestations and rapes have been reported in different parts of the country. Statistics shows that in Delhi alone, a rape is reported on an average every 18 hours and molestations, every 14 hrs.

The nation is seething over the poor safety for women on roads. If not for the callous attitude of the police officials and if basic law and order are implemented it would have been a preventable crime. Indian women suffer hugely from entirely avoidable threats to safety and wellbeing. Safety and security are the fundamental rights of every individual.

The real reason behind such incidents is the lack of respect for women in our patriarchal society. The changes should come from the grass root level. The mindset of our people should change. We should pledge to treat all women with respect and demand respect from others. We should fight for women’s discrimination in our homes and workplace, and against their harassment by words or deeds.

Government also should take urgent and long term measures to ensure that such heinous crimes do not happen again. More police personnel should be employed on the roads particularly during those times when women are most vulnerable. There should be more police patrolling. Legal experts advice for courts dedicated to merely crime against women for reducing growing violence against them. Such dedicated courts will ensure speedy trials and reduction in time lag between crime and punishment. Tougher laws should be made for all crimes related to rapes, and the offence should be made non- bailable. Thus it should be made public that Indian legal system has zero tolerance for crime against women.

Finally as a society it’s our responsibility to teach our children in our homes and schools to respect women. Unless the attitude of our society towards women changes, it will be a long and effective fight for women.
