Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge – shortly known as DDLJ is the romantic love story between an NRI Raj and Punjabi Simraan, characters played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol respectively. Born as the daughter of a famous actress Tanuja, Kajol had just entered the Bollywood and stabilized herself by a few roles through Baazigar and Yeh dillagi, that she got this magical role opposite SRK. It’s the case of Shah Rukh Khan too. Though he debut with romantic and comic roles like Raju ban gaya gentleman, Deewana and King Uncle, he achieved success through negative traits of Darr and Baazigar. So, this movie can be termed as the rebirth of both the actors and perhaps, the best, popular and most successful movie of these two great stars. DDLJ is just to enter its adult stage, I mean 18 years since its release and the movie is still running noon show at Maratha Mandir, Mumbai. So, let us try to find what are those surprising packages hidden inside the movie that prompts people to come back to theatre to enjoy the lengthy movie of 3 hours again and again.

Story is not at all a new one and its climax was also not unpredictable. Yet people love to watch each and every bit of the movie till now. This movie gave a new romantic look to the innocent hero of Bollywood with lovely eyes and naughty heroine with deep secret hiding eyes. Perhaps the NRI factor helped a lot in attracting people to theaters, both Indian and abroad. When it was given a sensational Punjabi touch with beautiful marriage and romantic songs, it became an Indian movie with perfection. Such an experiment gave new face to Indian romance onscreen as well as introducing NRI themes to Indian cinema. Many such movies are now made in Bollywood like Kal ho na ho, My name is Khan, Kabhi khushi kabhi gum, kuch kuch hota hai etc and get success too.  

But I feel, most significant is the screen presence of SRK and Kajol and surprising chemistry that bonded these two actors together giving magic to screen. When importance was given to Indian tradition, culture and pure traits of an Indian lady, Indian audience accepted the movie with both hands and they laughed and cried, fully sinking in the love story of Raj and Simraan.

Time has passed by, decades have changed, already it is the third decade since the movie was released and many new trends have come and gone. Yet, it’s DDLJ and its sweet love story connecting East and West that has never faded from the hearts of millions of Indians. No doubt, this movie will remain Evergreen till the end of Bollywood!
