The history of Indian cinema would have been different id Dada Saheb Phalke had not taken money on loan against the jewelry of his wife and not produced ‘Raja Harishchandra’ - the first movie of Indian cinema. Phalke gave a new dimension to entertainment world by introducing cinema that later became the medium of offering different aspects of human life into it. The government of India honored him by starting an award with his name to be given to most prominent personality of the film world every year. 

Dada Saheb was born in Trimbkeshwar, near Nashik situated in Maharastra on 30 April 1870 as Dhundiraj Govind Phalke who had a liking for different forms of arts right from his childhood. He was admitted to J.J. School of arts, Mumbai at the age of 15 in 1885 where he learnt the art of drawing. Later he took admission in Kala Bhawan, the famous school for arts and photography and became a trained artist and photographer to make it his profession.

In the year 1910, when he was 40 and had no permanent source of income, he planned to produce movies in India and began exploring possibilities for the same by searching for equipments and the places for their availability. After gaining the firsthand information about the same, he went to England. And to purchase the equipment he borrowed money from different sources.

He was lucky to have met the editor of a weekly magazine ‘Bioscope’ in England almost 102 years before in the month of February,1912 who helped him manage to acquire knowledge and equipment with the help of another person who took him to his own studio and introduced him with different technicians and taught him about film production.

Dada sahib came back to India in April 1912 and first started with a documentary with the help of his own family members. Later, he planned to start a full-fledged movie and arranged for its finance by taking loan against his wife’s ornaments. Finally, he managed to produce ‘Raja Harishchandra’ with his own efforts in every department including sets, story, developing prints and editing. He did everything successfully and created history.
