Education is not a means to an end.  It is an end to a means.  That is education does not stop at any point in a person's life.  It is only a beginning of acquiring knowledge.  Every single day in a person's life is a learning experience.  We do not develop into what we are, all of a sudden.

Even a child in school is the same.  Learning happens on a day to day basis. It is likened to the life cycle of a butterfly.  From a small egg, a caterpillar comes out, which eats and eats to grow.  This builds a cocoon around itself and stays inside.  One fine day, it tries to break free and emerges.  It has to do it by itself and come out.  If you try to help it, the process may get disturbed and the butterfly dies.  In the same manner, a child does not grow and develop but evolve into an individual.  Allowed to develop in his own pace and effort, the full potential of the child is brought out.

Evaluation is the process in which the child's capacity is measured and graded.  Earlier evaluation took place only at the end of the academic year to find out if the child is eligible for promotion to a higher level.  The quarterly and half-yearly pen paper exams were considered merely practice for the final exam.  If the child is not well during the time of final exams, or becomes nervous of the exams, everything he has done and learnt during the academic year goes waste. 

So, what is the right method of evaluation?  How can the child be evaluated in a fitting manner?  CCE or Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation provides an answer to these questions.  The central board of education has developed this method of evaluation and it is now adopted by the government of Tamil Nadu educational board.  They are training the teachers intensively in this method of evaluation.  In this the development of the child is evaluated on a day to day basis.  Activities, assignments, values, attitudes, academic performance are all taken into account for evaluation.  There are formative and summative assessments which evaluate the child in different levels.
