Chitra's Records In Kerala State Awards

K.S. Chitra – the blessed voice of south is a star holder of many records. Not only that she has won maximum singing awards in female category of National awards, she has won it maximum times in Kerala state awards too. She has won it several times for Telugu, Tamil as well as Kannada. Through this article, I would like to briefly mention the songs and movies for which she got recognition in Kerala state awards.

When she entered the industry as a singer of 15 years old, Janaki was the shining star of Mollywood. She was the most established singer who rendered her beautiful voice for all most all leading ladies of the industry. When Chitra won her first state awards in 1985, Janaki has already won it for 11 times. Most surprising fact was that she was fully dominating the industry from 1970’s. Except two times, she was the single winner of the title. Most ironical is that since Chitra snatched her record of continuously winning it for 6 years and for the first time in 1980’s, she didn’t give it away till 1996 to Sujatha. Yes, Chitra holds a great record of winning Kerala state awards consecutively for 11 times. For many occasions, she was given for multiple songs as if it was very difficult to choose one among the best for her songs. Not only that in this period, she has contributed a lot for nourishing Malayalam melodies too.

Till now, she has it for 15 times, perhaps an unbreakable record. Only person who has won it more than her is none other than Yesudas – 24 times. Now let me mention the movies and songs for which she won state awards. In 1985, she started a new winning series. She won it for multiple songs – Aayiram kannumai, Poomaname and Ore swaram. The following 10 years, she won it continuously of which the songs, Manjal prasadam (Nakhashathangal) and Indu pushpam (Vaisali) help her to win in National awards section too. Other notable songs for which she won awards include – Thanka thoni (Mazhavil kavadi), Paala poove (Jnan gandharvan), Kannil (Innale), Swara kanyaka (Saanthwanam), Raja hamsame (Chamayam) and Shashikala (Devaragam). She lost it successively from 1996-98 and won it in 1999.

Gradually she lost her supremacy and had to face challenges from Sujatha and new singers of the industry. During 2000’s, she has won it thrice for 2001, 2002 and 2005 and after that she has never won it. Of those award winning songs, Karmukil varnante of ‘Nandanan’ needs special mention.
