After a lot of speculations the celebrated star couple of Mollywood – Dileep and Manju Warrior have filed for a divorce in Thrissur, ending their 16 year old marriage bliss. It’s not the first time celebrities have separated in Malayalam cinema, though it’s regarded as a trend in Hindi cinema. Nowadays established stars of Malayalam cinema are ending their marriage life – Kavya madhavan, Jyothirmayi and Mamta Mohandas are only the latest names added to the long list of celebrities.

Separation is a fact of Mollywood not for the present days only. It’s just co-incidence that all the three leading ladies of Malayalam cinema in the golden days of 1960s and 1970s – Sharda, Sheela and Jayabharathi have been legally separated from spouses. A shocking fact indeed! Divorces among heroines of middle era is also a noted fact. Srividhya, Sukanya, Nalini, Maathu, Bhanupriya, Gauthami, Revathy, Rohini, Mohini, Ambika, Charmila, Lakshmi and Santhi Krishna are among the heroines of 1980s and 1990s who have legally separated from their spouses. Lakshmi, Revathy and Santhi Krishna were married to their successful co-stars Mohan, Suresh Menon and Sreenath respectively. Lakshmi’s daughter Aishwarya who played Mohanlal’s female lead in Butterflies is legally separated from her husband Tanveer.  

Rohini was married to popular villain of silver screen Raghuvaran. Saritha was also a leading heroine of 1980s who appeared in classic movies like Kathodu kathoram. She legally separated from actor Mukesh and Mukesh has moved on with new life. There are speculations that actress Meena’s marriage is on the rocks. There are rumours about a broken relationship in Bhumika chawla’s life too, who played Mohanlal’s wife in Bhramaram.

Just a co-incidence – the three sisters of south Indian cinema – Kalpana, Kalaranjini and Urvashy have also divorced once. Urvashy was married to her co-star Manoj K. Jayan and now she is remarried and has become mother of a daughter. A few more names like Kaviyur Ponnama, Zeenat, Anju Aravind, Manju Pillai, Anju, Neena Kurup, Nandita Das, Kanakalatha, Thesni Khan, Rachana narayanan kutty and Meera Vasudevan and singer Gayathri Ashokan can also be added in the list. Many of them have moved on, while a few preferred to stay single giving preference to their profession.
