Palace on wheel is a deluxe train which was set for its maiden voyage on January 26 in 1982 with its concept taken from erstwhile era where it was used for personal usage by Nizams of Hyderabad, princely states of Rajputana & Gujarat and British viceroy. It was brought by the Indian Railways & Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation for the promotion of tourism in Rajasthan and was also nominated as the 4th lavish vehicle world-wide in 2010. The interior of the magnificent wagon was beautified by Delhi-based Monica Khanna. Each saloon portrays the artistic philosophy of the state symbolized by its handicrafts, paintings, furniture and furnishing.
The mushroomed vehicle has nearly 14 coaches; each has been named after earlier Rajput territories with matching principles of art of the interiors of the erstwhile era. These coaches are Sirohi, Bikaner, Alwar, Udaipur, Bharatpur, Kota, Bundi, Kishangarh, Dholpur, Jodhpur, Dungargarh, Jhalawar, Jaisalmer and Jaipur. Each coach has nearly four cabins and has been allured with modern amenities. The glorious rail has two magnificent restaurants namely The Maharani and The Maharaja which have been decorated with Rajasthani ambiance and serve Chinese, Indian and continental along-with a bar and spa saloon.
Allured with luxurious beauty the caravan will take its clients to the imperial land of sand dunes and regal castles of Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Chittaurgarh, Jaipur, Agra, Sawai Madhopur and Bharatpur. The voyage through the lavish wagon begins on every Wednesday from Safdarjung railway terminal at 5pm and end back in the same place.
The fare of the beautiful cortege might vary on the basis of type of occupancy, seasons of visit and routes taken by the vehicle. Earlier these rates were determined in dollar only but now these can be easily paid in Indian currency.
