Bollywood Divas Of B&W Silver Screen

Change is a part of life and people accept new changes easily, particularly if it is more colourful! Though people began to love beautiful faces on silver screen through black and white shades, when Eastman colour and Technicolor conquered everyone’s heart during late 50’s and early 60’s, people preferred to see their favourite stars’ faces in colour. Yet when I often see old movies and songs, I feel that certain faces look more beautiful in B&W, than colour. May be because B&W hides some tricks to cover the irregularities and bad marks of many faces onscreen! Through this column I would like to mention a few faces that look more beautiful in black and white screen that colour and this article is purely based on my personal opinion; perhaps it may not match with choices of yours.

First name that comes to my mind is that of Sadhana. Songs of ‘Woh kaun thi’ composed by Madan Mohan and sung by Lata Mangeshkar are my weakness and whenever I see Sadhna’s face displayed in the right hand side of you tube with the caption, ‘Lag gaa gale’, I can’t resist myself from opening the video and view it at least once. Sadhana has acted in many colour and black & white movies. Yet I feel that she looks gracefully beautiful in black and white movies like Woh kaun thi (1964) and Asli aur naqli. No doubt, she looks nice in Eastman colour movies like Arzoo (1965), Mera Saaya (1966) and Mere Mehboob of 1963. Yet in my opinion, she looks extremely nice in black and white screen.

Second name that comes to my mind is none other than the tragedy queen Meena Kumari. She is among the most versatile and beautiful actresses of Bollywood. She looks extremely beautiful in black and white movies like Dil apna aur preet paraya, Kohinoor and Saheb biwi aur ghulam. Though Pakeezah is the most memorable movie of her career, its colour shades couldn’t bring out the real beauty of this lovely actress.

Same is the case of almost all actresses who have ruled silver screen along with Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Raj kapoor during 50’s and early 70’s. The leading ladies of B’town like Nargis, Nutan, Vaijayanthimala, Nanda, Madhubala, Priya Rajavansh and Mala Sinha can be included in that list. Above all, the name of Madhubala needs special mention. Many ladies have come and gone from the glamour world of Bollywood, yet no lady has been able to attain the celebrity status and appreciation of Madhubala, who looks extremely beautiful without colour shades. Her smiling face still rules the whole world. That’s the charm of black and white screen beauties of Bollywood.
