Bollywood Dedicates 2014 To Woman-centric Roles

From Kangana Ranaut’s Queen to Priyanka Chopra’s Mary Kom and from Juhi Chawla-Madhuri Dixit starrer Gulaab Gang to Rani Mukherjee’s Mardaani, definitely Bollywood gave so much to woman-centric roles in 2014. Many such movies have released in theatres this year which gave preference to women-characters, the latest one being Sonam Kapoor's Khubsurat who reprised legendary actress and Bollywood diva Rekha’s role once again on screen after 34 years. The trend was started by Vidya balan in the early 2010s with movies like Kahani and The dirty picture and now more heroines are stepping into her shoes.

Among all the women-centric movies released in 2014, Kangana ranaut’s Queen far excelled others and was a roaring success at box office. It is also one of the best travel movies ever made on Indian screen. Highway starring Alia Bhatt is also a travel-based movie. The whole team travelled along the Indian highways to bring perfection to every frame of the movie. Though the movie directed by Imtiaz Ali was not a big success at Bollywood, it gave a new promising star to Bollywood in the form of Alia Bhatt, who delivered a wonderful performance in this movie. No doubt, ‘Highway’ is the best performance of Alia till now.

Gulaab Gang, based on the gang of women activists from Bundelkhand, was one of the most awaited movies of the year as it is the comeback movie of Madhuri Dixit after ‘Aaja Nachle’. Also the arch rivals of 1990s Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit shared the screen space for the first time. Though the movie received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office failure, Juhi Chawla stole the show with her smiles and acting skills.

Mardaani was the comeback movie of actress Rani Mukherji and was a box office success. Based on the theme of human trafficking, Rani plays the role of a police officer with Mumbai Police. Mardaani is the first released movie after Rani’s marriage. The comedy movies - Bobby Jassoos of Vidya balan emerged as a winner while Revolver Rani released after Queen was not up to audience’ expectations. Priyanka Chopra far excelled her role of Olympics medal winner – Mary Kom
