Bhutan - An Unsung Tourist Destination

Bhutan- our neighbor

Bhutan is a country where we do not need a visa to enter in but only a small formality while crossing over its border. The king of Bhutan is simple person whom you can see cycling around on the roads of Thimphu. By the way, grandfather of present king was a classmate of my father in agricultural university and he was a very simple person like the present king. I do not know why but we do not see many tourists going to Bhutan from our country despite all the facilities, wonderful culture and facilities for trekking available there.

Country of Buddhist followers

Bhutan in fact is a country of followers of Mahayan considered Tantrik stream of Buddhist religion. The small country with population of 700,000 people only still follows its traditions religiously and a visit to a Gompa will give you a clear picture of their trust in such matters. Archery is the national game of Bhutan and people love to do it practically as almost 70% of the country is covered with deep forests.

Overall, the country located in the lap of Himalayas has lot to offer to Nature lovers. People from allover the world come to visit this tiny country although the quantity is too small and restrictions are very firm. They do not want to destroy their environment; therefore, they have very limited number of tourists’ related activities in their country. Most of the tourists’ activities are limited to Thimphu and Paro area only which is situated nearby our country.

How to reach there

There are different ways an Indian can reach to Bhutan, if going by air the only international airport is in Paro, situated at the height of 7000ft and surrounded by hills and mountains scaling up to 16,000 ft. Tourists willing to go to Paro can take a direct flight from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati or Bodhgaya.

While on the subject, I would like to tell you that if any of you willing to travel to Nepal another neighboring country from Bhutan, the flight crosses over four highest peaks in the world out of five. However, if any of you are willing to go to Bhutan by road there are many places where you can cross in to Bhutan from Assam, West Bengal etc. As I told in the beginning, Indians do not need a Visa to enter into Bhutan.
