Bengalis Contribution To Bollywood Music

Perhaps Bollywood music begins with Bengali’s name. Can anyone even imagine Bollywood compositions without classical tunes of S.D.Burman or fancy numbers of R.D.Burman? Let me leave that question and ask you something else. Can you spend a day before television music channels or radio without listening Kishore Kumar? Let us move a few years forward and reach 90’s. What about Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik? Was the 90’s era possible without the voices of these two great singers?  And let us reach present and take about shining awards of Shreya Ghoshal at Filmfare and National awards. No doubt, she is the most talented voice of Bollywood at present; not only in Hindi, but she has dominated Indian music industry as whole. Before I move forward, let me take a few more names to prove that significant contributions to Bollywood music have come not from Mumbai, but from Kolkatta. Singers like Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Shaan and Music composers like Pritham also belong to West Bengal, that’s now called Paschim Bangla.

From the fact mentioned above, except the leading voices of Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan, Bengali voice has always nominated the industry. Same is the case of female voice too. After the name of Mangeshkar sisters, the most popular female voices of the industry are none other than Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal and both hold excellent records at different awards as well.

Era of 60’s was fully ruled by SJ-Rafi combination (Shankar Jaikishen – Mohdammed Rafi). S.D.Burman’s tunes were also immensely popular during this era, just one step below SJ. Yet with the end of 60’s, with the musical Aradhana of 1969, several happenings took place. Though S.D.’s name is taken first, it was R.D who completed Aradhana’s music giving new direction to Bollywood. There began the magical era of dominated Bengalis in Bollywood. The era of 70’s exclusively belongs to Kishore Kumar and R.D. They created huge waves in the industry, whose ripples have not seized yet even after decades. They continued Bengali magic till middle 80’s.

The torch was then carried forward by two leading singers of the industry – Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik, both hailing from Bengal. 90’s era exclusively belong to him. Alka Yagnik handled her position to another Bengali, Shreya. Now not only Shreya, many talented artists of Bengal have reached Bollywood giving their significant contributions. So, Bengal’s contributions to Bollywood music can never be forgotten. Before I leave, let me add a few more names - Salil Chowdhury, Amit kumar, Madhushree, Babul Supriyo and Hemant kumar? Can anyone easily forget the contributions of music composers Salil Chowdhury or Hemant Kumar?
