Beliefs Related To Valliyam Kavilamma

Each and every temple is related by some beliefs. Devotees who believe in them with good heart get positive results too. That’s the reason why such beliefs stand for years and decades and numbers of visitors also increase day by day. Through this column I would like to tell about another belief of a temple of Kerala - Valliyam Kavilamma. It’s devotees’ belief that if some sort of problems is happening in selling a piece of land for daughter’s marriage or children’s studies, belief in Valliyam Kavilamma can remove those black clouds. To find solutions to vasthu related problems of land too, many people visit Valliyam Kavilamma.

This temple carries a lot of variations and strange customs and majority of people come here for solution of land property problems. Bhadra devi is the main deity here. Valliyam Kavil Devi temple is situated in Kottayam district. It is located inside Travancore Rubber and Tea plantation, 14 kms away from Mundakayam. People come here with a pinch of soil from their property and as per suggestions given by astrologists they do required rituals too. It’s believed that thousands of people have got solutions to their problems related to property and vasthu.

This Kavu (a derivation of temple) is very close to nature and filled with trees. Its original position (Moolasthaanam) was Panchali medu, 10 kms away from present temple. When Pandavas stayed here they worshipped goddess named Valliyam Kavilamma and when they left the place, the deity was given to local tribal people of the forest. They took care of poojas and after centuries when they changed their residential location to Valliyamkavu, the temple was also shifted. Seeing the presence of goddess in dreams, Vanchipuzha Tampuran gave it to tribal head known as ‘Mooppan’. Passed through one generation to other, it finally reached Kandan Konthi Mooppan. After his death, it came under the direct rule of Tranvancore Dewaswom Board. Animal sacrifice was stopped during this time. After that, they divide the divine power into two due to increased strength and placed them as two – Bhadra and Durga.

Huge trees and climbers are best instances of divine power of this place. There is a shrine of tribal people outside the main temple and deity’s name is Karinkuttiyan. Couples deprived of kids tie cradles here in faith and belief. Deities of Pandavas are also seen here.

Main offerings and rituals include ‘Vellam Kudi’ and ‘Valiya Gurusi’ and both are conducted outside the outer walls of the temple and both are done to remove obstacles of life. Devotees used to pour liquor on the idol of Karinkuttiyan and this offering is known as Vellam Kudi. Valiya Gurusi is conducted after the last prayer of the temple.
