Historical Background of Bekal Fort

The famous Bekal Fort which is said to have its name originated from Baliakulam that literally means ‘large palace’ is about 10 km away from Kasaragod. The Bekal Fort located in between two islands is biggest fort in the state of Kerala and under the supervision of government of India under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology. Bekal is famous for its temples also devoted to different gods constructed by different royal families according to their faith. The temple of Lord hanuman and mosque constructed by Tipu Sultan are among the most visited religious places here.

Bekal had its strategic military importance being near to present day Karnataka right from the Vijayanagara Empire. Besides the Empire of Vijayanagara, the Fort of Bekal had been under the rule of Tipu Sultan and British government also. It’s not confirmed fact but all sources indicate the Fort of Bekal was constructed by Shivappa and as per the other sources the Fort was constructed during the period of Kolathiri Kingdom having their seat at Ezhimala in Kerala. However, Tipu Sultan used Bekal Fort as his point of operations during the time he was trying to take control over Malabar. After the death of Tipu Sultan the British under the East India Company took over the Fort.
