Assam, the northeastern state of Indian Republic, sits in the cusp of the seven sister states. Guwahati, its capital city, is known as the corridor of the North-East as the major road arteries pass through it that connects the far eastern states. Assam has become synonymous with the one-horned Rhinoceros and the only place in India to see the majestic creature in its natural environment.

 

Geography & Climate

 

The mighty Brahmaputra River – life line of Assam – is older than the Himalayas and enters the state through Arunachal Pradesh. After entering the state, the river, at some places is almost 16kms wide. Assam is blessed with rich reserves of petroleum, natural gas and some small quantities of minerals like Magnetic quartz, feldspar, and clay.  

 

Assam experiences a very heavy rainfall and a humid climate. Its climate can be rather termed as the Tropical Monsoon Rainforest for this very same reason.  The summer here are balmy between 35 – 38 degrees, while the winters are a chilly – touching 6 – 8 degrees. Spring and Autumn are extremely pleasant and see moderate rainfall.

 

Population & Religious demography

 

Assam is a ‘multi’ state – its multi-lingual, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic. There are more than 115 ethnic groups in Assam of which 69% identify themselves regionally, 19% locally and 3% nationally. Different communities of Assam speak around 45 different languages, falling in three major language categories – Austroasiatic, Indo-European and Sino-Tibetan. 

 

Assam is primarily a Hindu State with more than 60% population practicing Hinduism, followed by 30% of the population following Islam. Christianity and other religions make up a meager 3% of the population. Assamese and Bodo are the official languages while Bengali is the second most widely spoken language in the State.

 

Economy

 

Assam is a majority of an Agriculture state with more than 40% of its population engaged in it, and employing 69% of the total work force of the state. Tea is the most famous produce of Assam with the Assam Tea as its flagship. Petroleum and petroleum products constitute second major economic factor of the state. 

 

Administration

 

The state of Assam comprises of 27 districts that are demarked based on the natural features like hills, rivers, forests, etc. These 27 districts are further divided into 49 sub divisions for administrative and revenue purposes.
