Asha Bhosle And Asha Parekh - Compliment To Each Other

A few days back, I watched an old classic movie on you tube – Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon (1963) starring Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh. The romantic movie is still remembered for its wonderful songs contributed by O. P. Nayyar, Asha Bhosle and Mohd Rafi. When I heard the song, ‘Aakhon se uthari hai dil mein’ after a long time, I became extremely happy and for the first time I noted that both ‘Ashas’ are quite compliment to one another. Whether it is dancing number ‘Parde mein rahne do’ of Shikaar, romantic number ‘Jab chali dhanti hawa’ of Mera Sanam or teasing number ‘Oh mere Sona re’ of Teesri manzil, the songs never gave us the feeling that they were meant for someone else. Truth is that these songs cemented the position of ‘Asha’ as a singer and ‘Asha’ as a romantic actress of 1960s.

When Nassir Hussain’s association with Asha Parekh started in the early 1960s, Asha Bhosle was one among those who benefitted most. For all the Hussain movies with O. P. Nayyar as the music director, Asha Bhosle became the lead singer the most notable one being Phir wohi dil laaya hoon. When Nassir Hussain’s Teesri manzil discovered the real talent of R. D, Asha Bhosle also got benefited. Apart from songs pictured on Asha Parekh like ‘O mere Sona re’, Asha Bhosle also sync lipped for Helen for the cabaret number – Oh haseena zulfom wali. Asha sang all the songs of the movie including Aaja aaja mein hoon pyar tera and "Dekhiye Sahiban Woh Koi” breaking the myth that Lata Mangeshkar voice suits 1960’s leading lady most.

Yet it can’t be denied that Lata-Asha Parekh has given some wonderful songs in movies like Love in Tokyo, Baharom ke sapne, Aaya sawan jhoom ke, Kati Patang, Caravan, Pyar ke mausam, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai etc. A few of some dreadful combinations of both Ashas are Roka kai baar meine dil ki umang ko and Jab chali of Mere Sanam, Parde mein rahne do of Shikaar which gave second Filmfare award to Asha Bhosle, ‘Aakhon se uthari hai dil mein’ of Phir wohi dil laya hoon etc. Most of those songs were given by O. P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman, who are closely related to Asha Bhosle’s personal life.
