A.R. Rahman- An Indian Gem

In 2009 TIME magazine named A.R. Rahman as one of the most influential people in the world. Born on 6 January 1967 to a musically inclined family he has come a long way in his life. His father R.K. Shekhar was a film music composer and as a child A.R. Rahman used to assist him in his composition and most of his early formative training began like this. In the beginning he served as a keyboard player and a percussionist with his childhood friend Shivamani.

He was actually named R.S. Dileep Kumar by birth but when his sister fell ill in 1983 he changed his name to A.R. Rahman after embracing Islam. This was a very important point of time in his life and most of his future successes were due to the lessons that he learnt during this time.

His film career began in 1992 when he started Panchathan record inn which was a recording and mixing studio attached to the back of his house. He slowly went on to gain popularity mainly because of his penchant to produce some different kind of music. He soon began evolving as a musician. In 2005 he founded AM studios in Chennai thereby founding one of the most cutting edge studios in Asia.

He is mainly famous because in his music he integrates eastern classical music as well as western electronic music. In his successful career he has won numerous awards like BAFTA, Indian filmfare, 2 Grammy awards, a golden globe award and most notably his recent winning of Oscar awards for his composition of the background tracks in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. His earliest most famous composition was the Vande Matharam track which was extremely patriotic and even now it gives you a sense of elation and satisfaction when you hear it.

He has worked for numerous films, orchestras and recording studios not just in India but all over the world and due to his extensive body of work he has been known as “the Mozart of Madras” and I think he totally deserves it since he is also one of the most top-selling artists of all time. He is one artist who truly makes India proud wherever he goes.
