Aparna Sen

 

Aparna Sen is an Indian film director, Script Writer who has established herself as one of the leading actress. She got three National Film awards and eight International Film festival awards. She was honoured with the Padmashree Award by the President of India. She achieved Lifetime Achievement Award and served on juries at film festivals .

Aparna was born and bought up in Kolkata. She was born on October 25, 1945.She completed her schooling at Modern High School and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Presidency College, Kolkata. She did not complete the degree in from Presidency College. She met Brian Brake - the Magnum photographer in Kolkata in 1961. One of her ionic image, as a young girl welcoming the first sweet rain became very popular at that time. Later this image from Monsoon album published in Epoca, Life, Queen and Paris-Match.

Aparna Sen starred in a film at the young age of 16 in 1961 in the film Teen Kanya or Three Daughters. The film was directed by Satyajith Ray. Aparna Sen started her film carrier in 1965 with Mrinal Sens’s  AkashKusum. She acted in a number of Hindi films also. Aparna Sen acted in Tamil hit `Thee’ with stalwart Rajinikanth in 1981.

 Aparna Sen directed an English film, 36 Chowringhee Lane, which she also wrote the screen play. She won The National Award for Best Director in India and the Grand Prix (the Golden Eagle) at the Manila International Film Festival for this film. Her other works include Paromitar Ek Din, Mr.&Mrs.Iyer , Yuganta, Sati, Paroma. She acted as the dancer mother in Unishe April (1994), in a Bengali film.

Aparna Sen‘s first marriage was to Sanjay Sen.  Then she married the science journalist and writer Mukul Sharma. After that finally, she married Kalyan Ray, an author and professor of English in County College of Morris in Randolph in the United States. She has two daughters and has two grandchildren.

Aparna has directed films on a wide variety of subjects. Most of her films have been well famous nationally and internationally. Other than all her achievements, she was the editor of the fortnightly Bengali magazine `Sananda`.
