Anil Biswas - A Great Indian Musician

 

Anil Biswas

Anil Biswas was one of the most famous musicians of Indian cinema during 1940 to 1960. He is also credited for the use of full orchestra in Indian cinema for the first time. He worked with top Indian singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh and Talat Mehmood and successfully directed many others. Anil Biswas was associated with Indian television and Radio at the end of his career.

Anil-Da, as Anil Krishna Biswas was popularly called by his fans and friends was born 7 July 1914 at Barisal, now in Bangladesh in the family of Jagdish Chandra Biswas, a government employee. His mother was a music lover and wanted her son to be a musician, therefore she arranged for his music coaching from very beginning. Anil also took music by heart and soon found singing and theater to his liking. He soon mastered the art of drumming and started performing at theaters. He assisted classical singers of Sufi, Khyal, Thumari and Dadra with his expertise at tabla.

His Life

He was a student and also busy at theaters, but he went to jail six times for his active participation in freedom movement therefore police kept a strict vigil on him. Meanwhile his father passed away in 1930 and he had to give up his performance to join a school as a teacher. Later he joined Megaphone Gramophone Company and worked as a member of Rangmahal theater group where he worked as a musician, actor and music director and became very famous.

In the year 1934, he left Kolkata and came to Mumbai where he worked initially at Kumar Movietone but soon joined ‘Eastern Art Syndicate’ and worked for eleven movies continually for several years before joining in Sagar Movietone as composer, music director and singer. It was in 1937, the movie ‘Jagirdar’ with its great music made him a successful music director. He remained associated until 1939 with Sagar Movietone and enjoyed presenting successful music many more films.

Anil Biswas is said to have given success tips to great singer Lata Mangeshkar on how to control on voice during singing and provided many other tips on how to improve singing to her. Anil Biswas was married to actor Asha Lata and had four children but divorced her in 1954 and later married Meena Kapoor a famous lyrist. Anil Biswas breathed his last on 31 May 2003 in Delhi at the age of 89.
