Rajesh Khanna become over night star and the first super star of Bollywood through the movie ‘Aradhana’ of 1969. Anand Bakshi was the lyricist of S.D. Burman’s tunes in that movie. Rajesh Khanna movies is remembered most for his lovely performance, his magical screen presence as well as wonderful music. In most cases R.D is behind those successful tunes. Not only that R.D_Anand Bakshi combination has given some wonderful songs to Rajesh Khanna movies. Even it’s believed that those two wonderful songs of Aradhana were completed by R.D, not S.D and was credited as associated director too. Through this column I would like to briefly mention a few songs of Rajesh Khanna movies poemed by Anand Bakshi. Let me keep Aradhana as an exception or first step, with songs like Roop tere masthana, Kora kaagaz, Bahom mein bahar, Gunguna rahi and of course, Mere sapnom ki rani, safe in the account.

Let me start with songs of Dushman and Amar Prem. Amar Prem is still regarded as a classic movie of Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. R.D. Burman has wonderfully composed its songs. Let me emntion Rajesh Khanna songs of this movie though Raina beeti sung by Lata mangeshkar was also quite popular those days. Yeh kya hua kab hua, Kuch to log kaheinge and Chingari koi are those wonderful poems written by Anand Bakshi exclusively for Rajesh Khanna. Music of super hit movie – Dushman was given by Laxmikanth Pyarelal. Songs like Maine Dekha Tune Dekha and Vaada Tera Vaada were quite popular during 1972, the time when Rajesh Khanna was ruling Bollywood.

Can anyone easily forget the songs of Do raasthe? It was a blockbuster hit winning many awards. Though Mumtaz was given preference while composing music, we can’t deny the fact that it was Rajesh Khanna factor that made the movie and its music so successful. The songs were composed by Laxmikanth Pyarelal and the top hit charts include – Bindiya chamkegi, Yeh hai reshmi sulfein and Chup gaya sara nazaara. Hats off to the lovely song ‘Yeh reshmi zulfein’, sung on screen by Rajesh Khanna and playback done by Kishore Kumar.

Another megahit movie is none other than Kati Patang. All songs pictured on Rajesh Khanna are still popular, whether it’s Jis gali mein, yeh shyam masitani, Yeh jo mohabbat hai or Pyar deewana hota hai! Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon from mehbooba also needs special mention.
