An Error With Cost

Sangeeta Mario is a 30 year old woman happily married to Rajeev Mario with a 4 year old boy and was expecting another child. 4 months ago she went into labor and gave birth to a baby girl but immediately after delivery she collapsed due to dehydration. She was taken to the trauma unit in KMC, Manipal, where they tried dialysis on her. After which she started bleeding from her mouth and this did not stop for the next 48 hours. It was later discovered that the bleeding was caused by renal failure due to medical negligence. She celebrated her anniversary with her husband in the ICU. After the incident she was in coma for three months and is in and out of the hospital since then. As a young mother she cannot take care of her young children or even nurse her baby girl, just because of the failure of basic patient care.

When one goes to doctor one goes with hope of getting cured but the rate of medical negligence is increasing and literally robbing patients. The hospital has provided with minimum compensation to keep the family from filing lawsuit. The father struggles to pay the mortgage, medical bills and child care all because of a minor human error. One must start valuing life more preciously and be careful that when at fault it is not traded for something cheap.  Especially in medicine.

This gross negligence on the hospital’s part cost Sangeetha her life and due to this inane act of human error, she now has to live under the shadow of helplessness. Her daily living has been altered beyond repair forever. This issue should be highlighted in a general sense since this is not just a one-off incident. This and similar incidents have been reported all over the country and in fact all over the world which just shows that this is not uncommon. Life is something valuable and precious and when we go to a hospital we give it to be a responsibility of the doctors and it is their duty to make sure life-changing errors like this don’t happen.
