Indore is located in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and is the 15th largest city in India spreading over an area of 3,898 square kilometers. There are lots of similarities between Indore and Mumbai that it is called as Mini Mumbai. This serves as the capital of Indore district. The other name of this place is Ahilya Nagari. Historical Details About Indore

 

The city of Indore was founded by Rao Nandlal Chaudhary. He was the Zamindar of that place with a small army and this region came under the Nizam of Hyderabad. Then Marathas came into power. The name Indore was derived from the name Indrapur. After the death of Madhavrao Peshwa, Marathas became powerless and Holkars ruled over this place. Maharaja Malhar Rao Holkar was the founder of Holkar dynasty and Indore remained their capital. Later Rani Ahilyabai Holkar who ruled from 1767 to 1795 shifted the capital to Maheshwar.

 

In the third Anglo-Maratha war in 1818 Holkars were defeated and this area was annexed with the British India. Again Indore was made as the capital city. After the independence of India Indore and other princely states were merged into the state of Madhya Bharat and Indore was made as its summer capital. The state of Madhya Pradesh was formed on 1st November 1956 and Bhopal was made as its capital.

 

Geography and Climate of indore

 

Indore is located in the Malwa plateau at an altitude of 553 meters above sea level. Vidhya range is located to its south. As it is situated in central part of India it has a moderate climate between tropical wet and dry climate and humid subtropical climate. The three seasons are summer, winter and monsoon. The average in summer ranges between 36 and 39 degree Celsius and in winter it drops to 4 to 6 degree Celsius in night time and 26 to 30 degree Celsius during daytime. Southwest monsoon brings rain to this place and the place receives 32 to 35 inches rainfall annually. The rainfall is received from July to September.

According to the 2011 census the population of Indore is 1,960,631 in which 52% are males and 48% are females. The average literary rate is 87.38% with a male literacy rate of 91.84% and female literacy rate of 82.55%. The main language spoken here is Marathi and other languages widely spoken are Hindi and Malwi. The people of different cultures like Sindhis, Punjabis, Marwaris, Rajasthanis and South Indian live here in harmony.

Some of the places of interest in Indore are the following,

 

Lal Bagh Palace: It is located on the banks of the Khan River and the construction was started in 1886 by Tukoji Rao Holkar II and was completed in 1921 by Tukoji Rao Holkar III. It spreads over an area of 28 acres and is the cultural centre of Madhya Pradesh.

 

Kanch Mandir: This Jain temple was built in the first half of the 20th century by Sir Hukamchand Seth and this is also called as glass temple because the walls, ceiling, floor, pillars and doors have glass works.

 

Krishnapura Chhatris: These exquisite cenotaphs are built in the cremation ground of the Holkars. There are two Chhatris are of Tukoji Rao II and Shivaji Rao connected by a prayer hall. When illuminated the Chhatris glow in the night sky.

 

Rajwada: The Hokar Palace has seven storeys and built with a blend of Maratha, Mughal and French architecture. It houses eleventh century sculptures.

 

Geeta Bhavan: This is a religious place open to people of all religion.

 

Mahatma Gandhi Hall: This building was built in 1904 and named as King Edward Hall and was renamed in 1948 as Mahatma Gandhi Hall and this is an Indo-Gothic structure with a clock tower.

 

Gopal Mandir: Krishna Bai Holkar built this Krishna temple in 1832.

 

Indore Museum: it has a collection of Parmar sculptures, coins, arms and armours.

 

Kamala Nehru Park: It is also called as Chidiya Ghar and has a park and a zoo.

 

Deoguradia: This is a monolithic rock temple built during 7th century and also called as Garuda Tirth.
