All About Kanpur

 

Kanpur is located at the banks of the River Ganges and is the largest city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India spreading over 1640 square kilometers. According to the census of 2001 it has a population of about 4 million. It is one of the places in North India with historical and commercial importance. It is the fifth largest city of India and ninth most populous city in India. It is the headquarters of the district of Kanpur including the towns, Kanpur-Nagar, Kanpur-Dehat, Etawah, Auraiya, Farrukhabad and Kannauj.

 

Historical Details About Kanpur

 

The city was founded by Chadela Dynasty and it is said that the name originated from Kanhiyapur or Karnapur and is spelled as Cawnpore. Kanti Deo Maharaja founded the Kohna village in 1207 AD and the Sur Dynasty ruled over the place after that. Kanpur gained its prominence only in the second half of eighteenth century. It was ruled over by Shuja ud daula, the Nawab of Oudh. From 1773 to 1801 he ruled over the place and he was defeated by British in 1765. In 1801 the city went into the hands of the British according to the treaty of 1801 with Nawab of Awadh Saadat Ali Khan. After than it became one of the important military stations of British government in India. It got the status of a district on 24th March 1803. After the first war of independence in 1857 it became an important center for leather and textile industries. The British India Corporation had its headquarters here and this led to the establishment of many industries in this region.

 

Geography and Climate

 

Kanpur is located at an altitude of 126 meters above mean sea level. The River Ganges flows in the northeastern part of the district and the River Yamuna flows in the south between Avadh and Bundelkhand. Kanpur is situated in the Indo-Gangetic plains of India. The Ganga Barge area supplies water to the people and farmers.

 

The city enjoys humid subtropical climate with long hot summers and mild short winters. The temperature reaches 0 degree centigrade in winter and rises as much as 48 degree centigrade in summer. The dust storms and hail storms are seen in this place in summer and the monsoon season ranges from July to September. It also receives some of its rainfall in March and April. Hailstones are seen with rain in the month of January. The average rainfall per year is 885 mm. The best time to visit the city is October, November, February and March.

 

People and Culture

 

Among 5 million population of Kanpur, 76% of people are Hindus and 16% of people are Muslims. People belonging to other religions like Sikhism, Jainism, Christianity and Buddhism are also living here in small groups. 70.36% of the people of Kanpur are literates among which 71.92% are males and 60.25% are females. People speak various languages like Hindi, Urdu, English, Bengali and Punjabi. People eat pani puri, alu tiki, dhai puri, dhai chat, dhai papdi, egg rolls, biryani, etc. Chewing pan is a common practice here. Some of the areas of Kanpur are Chaman Ganj, econ Ganj, Parade, Iftikharabad, Idgah Colony, KDA Colony, Jajmau, Moti Nagar, Govind Nagar, Ashok Nagar, etc.

 

The popular newspaper Dainik Jagran is published from here and other widely read newspapers and journals in this city is Amar Ujala, Hindustan, Hindustan Times, Economic Times, The Pioneer, The Times of India, Tabloid I-NEXT and there are 6 FM Radio Stations in this place namely IIT Kanpur, BIG FM, Red FM, Radio Mirchi, AIR FM Rainbow and Gyan Vani. Cricket is very popular here and the city has the famous Green Park Stadium with a capacity of accommodating 60,000 people.

 

Economical and Educational Details About Kanpur

 

Kanpur ranks tenth among the top ten industrial cities of India with a GDP of 20 billion USD. It produces textile and leather products along with fertilizer, chemicals, soap, hosiery and two wheelers. Many engineering industries are located in the city like Lohia machines, Duncans, JK Industries Group, etc. There were many tanneries located in this place few decades back but they are at the verge of extinction due to lack of innovative methods. There were about 300 tanneries in the year 2006.  

 

One of the main advantages promoting the economic growth of Kanpur is the two national highways NH 2 and NH 25 crossing the region. It also houses one of the IT parks in India in its Awadhpuri area. The industries like GAIL, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Steel Authority of India Limited, Lal Imli, LML, Nerolac, etc are located here.

 

The educational institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, Chandra Shekhar Azad Agricultural University, Central Pulse Research Institute and Leather Institute has contributed to the talented work force in the region. There Chatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University formerly called as Kanpur University is popular all over the world. The various courses like Graduation, Post Graduation, M. Phil and Ph. D programs are available in IIT Kanpur. The other universities and colleges located here are Central Textile Institute, Krishna Institute of Technology, Government Polytechnic, DAV Degree College, Halim Muslim Degree College, Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Medical College, Jawahar Lal Nehru Homeopathic College, National Sugar Institute, Hindustan Aeronautical Limited, PPN Degree College, BND College, Christ Church College, etc.

Transport Facilities in Kanpur

 

Kanpur Airport is located in Chakeri just 13 kilometers from the main city. Every Monday to Saturday the Air India flights are flying from Kanpur to Delhi regularly. If you want to take international travels you have to go to Lucknow which is 65 kilometers from Kanpur. The Amausi International Airport is located here and it is well connected by air to all the major cities of India like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, etc. If you want to reach Kanpur and if there no direct flight, then you have to reach either Delhi or Kolkata or Mumbai and take domestic flights from there to Lucknow and drive from there to Kanpur.

 

There is Kanpur Civil Airport in this city that is used by small civilian aircraft and by the flying club of Kanpur, DGCA and NCC Air Wing. There is another IIT Kanpur Airport and this is also called as Kalyanpur Airport and this used by the Aerospace Engineering Department of Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur.

 

Kanpur is well connected with all the big cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Indore, Surat, Lucknow, Nagpur, etc by train. There are thirteen railway stations in the city namely Kanpur Central, Kanpur, Kanpur Anwarganj, Kanpur South, Chakeri, Kalyanpur, Rawatpur, chandari, Mandhana Jn, Kanpur Bridge Left Bank, Kanpur SMU CBSA and Purana Kanpur. However Purana Kanpur is not functioning now. The Kanpur Central railway station is the biggest railway station of North Central Railways. The Kanpur Metro project is to be constructed soon.

 

Trams started functioning in Kanpur in June 1907 and they were closed on 16th May 1933. The city is well connected by road with other parts of the country. The NH 2, NH 25, NH 86 and NH 91 pass to Kanpur. The important bus stand in Kanpur is Shaheed Major Salman Khan Bus Station which is commonly called as Jhakarkati Bus Station. Other bus stations in the city are Chunniganj Depot, Fazalganj Depot, Juhi Aka Kidwai Nagar Depot, Rawatpur Depot, Yashoda Nagar Depot, Defence Colony Depot, Jajmau Depot, Vikas Nagar aka Azad Nagar Depot, Azad Nagar Bus Depot, etc.

 

Kanpur Metropolitan Bus Service is one of the cheapest and easiest means of transport within the city. There are 300 buses running under JNNURM in which 50% of the share is that of the Central Government, 30% is of the state government and 20% is of the Nagar Nigam. The suburban services run from Shahid Major Salman Khan Bus Staion and Rawatpur. Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation runs these buses. The interstate buses are run by the Kanpur Lucknow Roadways Service.

 

Places of Interest in Kanpur

 

Some of the historical places of Kanpur are Gora Kabristan, a graveyard, Radh-Krishna Mandir, Panki Mandir, Kherepati Temple, Anandeshwar Temple, ISKCON Temple at Bithur, Lav Kush Barrage on Ganges, Kanpur Memorial Church, Gandhi Hall, Kanpur Sangrahalaya, Jajmau Siddhant Ghat, Nanarao Fort, Saja Ud Daulah Mosque, Massacre Ghat, Sarsaiyya Ghat, Bhitargaon Temple, Musanagar Tila, Kanpur Central, Jama Ul Ulum Madrasa and Masjid at Patkapur, Habiba Masjid at Jajmau, Jajmau Tila, Baradevi Temple, Boodha Bargad tree, etc. It was on this banyan tree that 144 Indians were hanged after the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.

 

Shri Radha Krishna Temple: It is noted for its architectural beauty and has statues of Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rama.

 

Allen Forest Zoo: This is the second best zoological park in Uttar Pradesh with its vast greenery.

 

Ganga Barrage: This is located in the old Kanpur built across the River Ganges and there is a boating club here.

 

Gautam Buddha Park: This is a weekend picnic spot that is opened recently and is situated on its way to IIT Campus.

 

Bithoor: This is situated in the riverside of Holy Ganges and to reach there you may take a boat ride across the river.

 

Kanpur Sanghralaya: It is the museum containing old books, pictures and other items established by British.

 

Kamla Retreat: This museum was established by JK Group.

 

Mahatma Gandhi Park: Boat ride is available in this park.

 

Harcourt Butler Technological Institute: This is the oldest engineering college started in 1921 by Sir Harcourt Butler who served as the Governor at that time. It spreads over 280 acres.

 

Apart from these places, there are some amusement parks also in Kanpur like Micky House, Jungle Water Park, Sports Village and Ekta Park.
