All About Indian Cuisine

What comes to our mind when the name the Indian cuisine is mentioned is its diversity. Next thing that everyone will ponder about is spicy. There are some misconceptions about Indian cuisine because all the food items are not spicy. The traditions and culture has a great impact on the food items eaten. In India cooking is considered as an art. Mothers and grandmothers of the family teach the art of cooking to their daughters and granddaughters. It is a custom in many families to sit and eat together during the mealtimes. This increases the bond of love and elevates the feeling of tolerance towards one another.

The Indian cuisine is usually prepared with fresh ingredients from scratch. The frozen food items are usually not preferred. In traditional families the ladies like to prepare the foods from the scratch. For example the wheat is bought from the stores and they wash it dry it in sun and take it to the mill and get it ground to flour and then sieve it and store it in the airtight containers. When compared with the wheat flour bought readymade from the stores homemade flour is healthy, hygienic and nutritious. Almost all the food preparations like pickles, pappads, garam masala and powder varieties like turmeric powder, coriander powder, chilli powder, cumin powder, pepper powder, etc. are made at home.

Indian cuisine is a blend of Aryan cuisine, Persian and Arab cuisine, British cuisine and Portuguese Cuisine. People living in other places of the world think that Indians are mainly vegetarians. But this is a misconception. Only one third of the Indians are observing vegetarianism and others are not. But still, Hindus avoid beef as cow is a sacred animal to them and Muslims avoid pork as this is a taboo for them.

There is a common misconception that all the Indian foods are hot, spicy and oily and so are not good for health. However not all of them are so. Only those special dishes prepared during special events are oily and spicy. Other day to day items are not spicy. Not only that they are not bad for health but also they are good for health because they are made from fresh ingredients and fresh vegetables and fruits.

Many dishes of Indian cuisine do not need oil at all. For example idli is made by steaming without even one teaspoon of oil. In many dishes oil is used in least quantity like one or two teaspoons for the whole servings and even this is used just for seasoning the food. If preferred one can eat them without seasoning also. But they taste slightly different. Many medicinal herbs are used in Indian cuisine such as turmeric, ginger and garlic. Eating them is like eating the medicines and so they will not harm you and will only benefit you.

Many people think that all the foods of Indian cuisine are difficult to cook. Some are difficult and I agree with this but not all of them. It depends upon the recipe you select. There are lots of recipes like tandoori chicken, panner makkanwala, mutton chops, etc which are very easy to cook and can be prepared within a matter of minutes.
