New Delhi is the capital of India and is one of the nine districts of Delhi Union Territory. This historical city was inaugurated on 15th December 1911. Delhi spreads over 1483 square kilometers. The population of Delhi is 16.75 million. It is situated along the banks of River Yamuna. King George V and Queen Mary laid the foundation stone for building the city. The capital of India was moved from Calcutta to New Delhi. After the independence of India, in 1956 it was made into Union Territory in 1956. Delhi was extended to Chanakyapuri in 1950s.

Delhi enjoys a humid subtropical climate. The summers are hot and long while winters are short and cold. Summer is extremely hot from March to May. The lowest temperature is 30.9 degree Fahrenheit and the highest temperature is 116.1 degree Fahrenheit. The average temperature is 77 degree Fahrenheit. When the monsoon rains start at the end of June the temperature decreases. Though there is rainfall throughout the year most of the monsoon rains come in July and August. The average annual rainfall is 714 mm.

 

The maximum length of Delhi is 51.9 km and the maximum width of 48.48 km. Delhi may be classified into North Delhi, South Delhi, East Delhi and West Delhi. The suburbs of North Delhi are Civil Lines, Model Town, Daryaganj, Kashmere Gate, Delhi Gate, Pitampura and Kingsway Camp. The areas that comprise South Delhi are R. K. Puram, Hauz Khas, Defence Colony, Kalka Ji, Lajpat Nagar, Greater Kailash, Chanakyapuri and Vasant Vihar. Preet Vihar, Vivek Vihar, Shahdara, Mayur Vihar, Patparganj and Lakshmi Nagar are located in East Delhi and Patel Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Janakpuri, Punjabi Bagh, Rohini and Pitampura are located in West Delhi.

There are more than 3000 primary schools, 700 middle schools, 550 secondary schools and 1300 senior secondary schools in Delhi that are administered by the Directorate of Education. The education system practiced here are 10+2+3/4. More than 16% of the total populations of Delhi are graduates. The important universities located in Delhi are Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, National Law University, Indira Gandhi National Open University and Jamia Hamdard University. Other than these, there are nine deemed universities. There are five medical colleges and eight engineering colleges located here. The major newspapers published are The Hindustan Times, The Pioneer, Asian Age, Business Standard, Indian Express, The Hindu, Times of India, Dainik Jagran, Dainik Bhaskar, Pavitra Bharat, Punjab Kesari, Hindustan Dainik, Navbharat Times, etc. The Feroz Shah Kotla Cricket stadium is located in Delhi where international matches are played. Apart from this Ambedkar Football Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium are located here.

 

Economy of New Delhi

 

Many major industries like information technology, hotel and tourism industry, banking and financial sectors, media and telecommunications are located in Delhi. According to the World Wealth Report of 2011, it ranks 39th in its economic activity. The per capita income of the people is Rs. 1,35,814. The primary sectors contribute 1.4% of the gross SDP while the secondary sectors and tertiary sectors contribute 20.2% and 78.4% respectively.

 

The IT companies are centered on the NCR region of Delhi. There are a number of IT parks and multinational companies here and is the largest software export center in India. The international and national trade fairs are conducted in Pragati Maidan which spreads over seven acres.

 

The important exhibitions, conferences and promotional events are conducted in the India Expo Center. CGO is one of the commercial centers of Delhi which houses MTNL, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Ministry of Disinvestment and National Afforestation and Eco-development Board.

 

Cannaught Place is the busiest place in Delhi with its shopping malls, cinema theatres, galleries, etc. The Cottage Industry Emporium where you can find Indian jewelry, silk, furniture, pottery, sandalwood and toys and clothes is located here. About Delhi Transport

 

Indira Gandhi International Airport is situated in Delhi and is one of the busiest airports in Asia with traffic of more than 23 million passengers. It has six terminals but only Terminal ID and Terminal 3 are operational.

 

There are five railway stations in Delhi namely New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station, Nizamuddin Railway Station, Anand Vihar Railway Terminal and Sarai Rohilla Railway Station. The internal transport of Delhi is provided by Delhi Metro, buses, taxis and auto rickshaws.

Other monuments in Delhi are Rajpath, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Raj Ghat, Purana Qila, Tughlaqabad Fort and Azaad Hind Gram. You can get the view of Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Indian parliament from Rajpath. India Gate is the memorial for the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. Raj Ghat is the cremation ground of Mahatma Gandhi.

Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India and if you climb up the top you can get few great glimpses of the city.

 

The major parks, gardens and recreations centers are The Mughal Garden in Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shalimar Garden, Shish Mahal, Rose Garden, Lodi Gardens, Mohammad Shah’s Tomb and Sikander Lodi’s Tomb, National Zoological Park, Buddha Jayanti Park, Musical Fountain, Nehru Park, Garden of Five senses and Millennium Park.
