About Varkala

 

Varkala is a pilgrim town in Thiruvanathapuram district, Kerala. It is located 37 km from south of Kollam and lies between Alleppey and Kollam. Varkala is both religious and tourist place.   

Papanasam beach or Varkala beach is only a 10 kilometres from Varkala. It is said to be that, a dip in the holy water in the beach remove all sins in our body and soul and hence it got the name ‘Papa Nasam. Kappil Lake is 4 km from Varkala. It is a best place for the fishing with boating.

Anjengo Fort is a well-known tourist destination and has historic importance. In this place the first trade settlement of the East India Company was done. It is located about 12 km from Varkala and lies between the sea and backwaters. Earlier the Dutch, English and the Portuguese tried to occupy the place.

Sivagiri Mutt, established by the great Hindu social reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru. He was the leader of Ezhava community and made the place varkala his head quarters.  Sivagiri Matt is a little distance from the beach. Sivagiri, the final resting place of Sree Narayana Guru, is near Varkala. Lakhs of devotees rush every year in Sivagiri during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days (30th December to 1st January). Varkala Tunnel is built by Sir T.Madhava Rao, the dewan of Travancore in 1867. It was a 924 ft long tunnel.

East West University of Brahmavidya and Sree Narayana Gurukulam , Priyadharshini boat club  (0.2 Km) are in Varkala. The Scientific School of Yoga, Naturopathy and Ayurvedic hospital are main attractions in this place.

Janardana Swami Temple, the ancient temple in this place, is said to be 2000 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Hanuman.  Non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the inner temple. The temple festival is held on March.

Sarkara Devi Temple famous ancient temple situated at Chirayinkeezhu near varkala. The main deity of the temple is Bhadrakali. Kaliyoot festival is very famous celebration in this temple. It is celebrated on t he Malayalam month Kumbham.

 Nearest Main Railway Station is Varkala. Nearest Airport is Trivandrum International Airport.
