About South India

South India comprises of the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala along with the union territories, Puducherry and Lakshadweep. South India is in the shape of a triangle with Bay of Bengal in the east, Arabian Sea in the west, Indian Ocean in the south and Eastern and Western Ghats on either side of the Deccan plateau. Some of the important cities of South India are Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Trivandrum, Cochin, Madurai and Visakhapatnam.

 

Tamil is the official language of Tamil Nadu, Telugu is the official language of Andhra Pradesh, Kannada is the official language of Karnataka and Malayalam is the official language of Kerala. Tamil was given the status of classical language in 2002 and Telugu and Kannada in 2008 by the Government of India. There are 60 million native speakers of Tamil, 75 million speakers of Telugu, 38 million speakers of Kannada and 33 million speakers of Malayalam.

 

The rivers Cauvery, Godavari, Krishna, Vaigai, Thamirabarani, Pennar and Tungabadra and its tributaries flows through the states of South India. The total population of South India is 233,000,000 with a density of 337 people per square kilometers. The birth rate is 20.4 per 1000 and the death rate is 7.7 per 1000. Most of South India has a tropical climate and receives rainfall from South West monsoon and North East monsoon. The temperature ranges from 20 degree centigrade to 35 degree centigrade.

 

The wildlife sanctuaries situated in South India are Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Eravikulam Wildlife Sancutary, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thekkadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary,Kunthakulam Bird Sanctuary, Crocodile Bank, Viralimalai Sanctuary, Bandipur National Park and Nagarhole National Park. The important hill stations in South India are Munnar, Mattupetti, Ponmudi, Kodaikanal, Nilgiri Hills, Ooty and Yercaud.

 

The monuments worth visiting are Jewish Synagogue, Kaudiar Palace, Mattancherry Palace, Bolgotty islands and Cochin Boat house in Kerala, Arjuna’ Penance, Rock Fort Temple, Valluvar Kottam and Mahabalipuram  in Tamil Nadu and Gol Gumbaz and Mysore Palace in Karnataka. Some of the temples in South India are Guruvayoor Temple, Kalpathy Temple, Sabarimala Temple, Thriprayar Temple in Kerala, Chavavaneashwara Temple, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, Krishnapuram Temple, Palani Murugan Temple, Kumbeswara Temple and Thanjavur Bragadeswara Temple in Tamil Nadu, Badami Cave Temple and Somnathpur Temple in Karnataka and Tirupati Tirumala Balaji, Saneeshwara Temple, Sreesailam Temple and Thousand Pillar Temple in Andhra Pradesh.

 

Per capita State Domestic Product Rs. 27,027 is higher when compared to the national GDP of 23,222. Rice is the staple food of South Indian people. The crops cultivated are paddy, millet, pulses, cotton, sugarcane, chilli, coffee, tea, rubber, pepper, tapioca and cardamom. 70% of India’s coffee production comes from Karnataka.

 

If you want to reach South India by air you can select one of the airports located in Chennai, Bangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Trichy, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Mangalore. Idli, dosai, vada, pongal, puri, sevai, uttappam, semiya, kara bath, vangi bath, masi sambal, chutney and bisi bela bath are the famous food items in South India.

 

In South Indian politics there is a mixture of both regional parties and national parties. Some of the parties are Indian National Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India(M), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Janata Dal, Telugu Desam Party, NTR Telugu Desam, United Democratic Front and Left Democratic Front. South India is a land of culture and traditions.
