About Shankumugham Beach

 

Shankumugham beach is very near to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The beach is very attractive place for tourists especially for the great sculpture “Jalakanyaka” or “Sagarakanyaka”. Kanayi Kunjuraman, one of the most renowned sculptures was behind this great creation. Many of the adults and tourists come here only because of looking upon the beauty of the sculpture for so many hours. Another attraction for many one who coming to this beach is for watching the beautiful sunset, in a calm atmosphere away from the huge crowd of the city.

Thousands of hindus perform “bali tharpanam” in this beach on the auspicious day Karkkida Vavu.  Bali tharpanam means paying homage to our forefathers.  Near to beach a Skating school is there. The school conducts classes for children in skating. In addition to that an Indoor Sports Complex is there providing various facilities for playing different games for adults and children.

Shankumugham beach is the center of cultural heritage of the city. Sree Padmanabhaswami temples’ Aarattu festival is conducted in this beach. Padmanabhaswami temple is the proud of Thiruvananthapuram city, which is considered as the richest temple in the world. Aarattu festival is conducted every year in the month of March or April on the Painkuni Uthram day. Aarattu means procession of various idols like Ganapathi, Shiva and Krishna from all around provides a pleasing experience to the devotees. Aarattu procession starts from the temple followed by thousands of people ends in Shankumugham beach. Shankumugham temple is also near this beach. The main deity in this temple is of Goddess Durga. People who spent their time in beach also visit this temple.

Veli tourist village is also near to Shankumugham beach. It is also beautiful spot for relaxing. The main attraction in Veli is of the statue of Shangue. Boating is another one that attracts tourists to this place. Tourists, adults and children are enjoying a lot by spending time on small boats which are available on hire. Park adjacent to the lake has huge sculpture; children’s are allowed to climb the sculpture and play. Coconut trees standing on the banks of the lake give a perfect beauty to the beach. The other attractions near to this beach are Padmanabhaswami temple, Napier museum, Kuthiramalika Palace and Kovalam beach.
