About Haryana

The state of Haryana was carved out of the Punjab Province in 1966 to give it a separate linguistic identity. It is one of the wealthiest and most economically developed states. Panipat and Kurukshetra – the two famous battlefields – shaped the history of India. Haryanvi is the language spoken here which is distinct from the Punjabi that is primarily spoken in the neighboring state of Punjab out of which it was carved out.

 

Geography & Climate

Haryana, the landlocked state, has four major geographical regions; the plains between the river Yamuna and the Ghaggar River form the large part of the state, Shivalik Mountain features in the northeast, The Aravali Range at its feet and the semi-arid dessert region to the south west. Haryana experiences extreme climates – hot summers around 50 degrees centigrade to cold winters with temperatures going to 1 degree or even lower sometimes. July to September is the monsoon season when the state receives majority of its rainfall.

 

Population & Religious demography

Haryana is primarily a Hindu state with 88% of its population practicing Hinduism. Sikhs and Muslim equally form the second minority community in the state. Cast system is not only primarily seen in the rural parts of the state, but also in the urbanized cities of the state. There is the rudimentary administration system called Khap that rules over the rural Haryana.

 

Economy

Haryana’s economy is primarily manufacturing and major manufacturing giants have set up their plants in various cities of Haryana. Haryana is also a major Business Process Outsourcing hub. Agriculture is still practiced but after its contribution to the Green Revolution, the contribution of Agriculture has taken a back seat in the states GDP. Yamuna Nagar, Faridabad, Panipat, Ambala, Hissar, Rohtak, etc. are some of the major industrial and economic centers of the state.

 

Administration

Like Goa, Haryana’s legislature too is unicameral – only one legislative house – The Legislative Assembly that consists of 90 members. The state is represented by ten members in the Lok Sabha and 5 in Rajya Sabha. The Chief Minister is the legislative head of the state that runs the day-to-day administration.
