About Goa

Tucked away on the western coast of the lush Sahyadri range, is the smallest state of Indian Republic, Goa. Goa is different from other India states because it was isolated for more than 450 years from the rest of the country by the Portuguese rule there. Goa and Goan lifestyle, culture, cuisine is therefore highly influenced by the Portuguese culture and lifestyle.

Portuguese first landed in Margao in the 16th century as merchants and later established themselves as rulers of Goa. In 1961 it was annexed by India and became its smallest state.

 

Geography & Climate

Nestled on the western escarpment of the Western Ghats in the Konkan strip, Goa measures just over 3500 sq. km. The highest point of the state is Sonsogor at 1160 meters.  Rivers Mandovi, Terekhol, Zuari form the lifelines of the state and the port of Margao on the mouth of river Zuari forms the natural harbor – one of the best in South Asia. Goa has a total coastline of 101kms, with some of the famous and best beaches to visit during holidays.

Goa has a tropical monsoon climate – hot and humid all through the year. The monsoon rains arrive in early June and last till September. October to February is the best time to visit Goa and enjoy various festivals and celebrations. March to May is the summer season with temperature hardly falling below 35 degrees.

 

Population & Religious demography

Goa is the fourth largest state in terms of population of 1.34 million. Goa is a potpourri of culture and religion – with 65% of the population being Hindu, 27% Christians and 6% Muslims. Goa is highly influenced by the Portuguese culture and traditions, especially with the Christians. The architecture too displays strong Portuguese influence. Konkani, Marathi, and Portuguese are the main languages of Goa.

Apart from the favorite tourist attraction, it is also a major religious center for Hindus and Christians with many important shrines. The Mangeshi Temple, Bom Jesus Cathedral, and Fort Aguada are some of the tourist attractions.

 

Economy

With exotic beaches, lush green forest areas and historical places makes tourism as Goa’s primary industry. It handles as much as 12% of the international visitors arriving in India. Except the monsoon months, domestic and international visitors visit Goa throughout the year. The Europeans prefer the winter months while the summer months Late May, early June are preferred by the domestic travelers.  Apart from tourism, mining is its second largest industry. Goa produces Iron Ore, Manganese, bauxite, etc. that is handled by the Margao port.

 

Administration

Goan legislature consists of a Legislative Assembly consisting of forty members, led by the Chief Minister.  Goa, unlike other states, has a unicameral legislature and the party that enjoys the simple majority of the house rules the state.
